Abstract

Hermetically sealed enclosures and constructions are disclosed for use in endoscopic systems, particularly endoscopic systems with electronic imaging and illumination systems in the enclosures. Compound optical windows are also disclosed for use in the systems. The compound optical windows may have separate panes for an imaging system and an illumination system, and contrast-reducing optical boundaries are between panes.

Claims (22)

1. A housing portion for an endoscope for housing a component for the endoscope, the housing portion comprising at least two dissimilar metallic sections joined by a solid-state welding process to form a hermetic seal;

wherein the housing comprises a first section comprising a first metal, and a second section adjacent the first section, and the second section comprising a second metal weldably dissimilar to the first metal, the first section and second sections joined by a solid-state welding technique to form a hermetic seal, and wherein the housing portion includes at least one of an electronic component of an imaging system and an illumination system, wherein the component for the imaging system comprises an image sensor and the component for the illumination system comprises an LED light source;

further comprising a third section comprising the first metal or a third metal weldably dissimilar to the metal of the second section, the second section disposed between the first and third sections and joined to each by a solid-state welding technique to form a hermetic seal;

wherein the first section is at the distal end of the housing and the third section is at the proximal end of the housing;

further comprising a metal shaft portion joined to the distal section, and distally away therefrom, via a hermetic metal seal;

wherein the proximal section includes an electrical connector; and

wherein the distal section comprises stainless steel, the second section comprises aluminum, and the third section comprises titanium.

2. The shaft-housing of claim 1 wherein the shaft includes an imaging system in a distal end portion of the shaft.

3. The shaft-housing of claim 2 wherein the imaging system is disposed behind a pane, the pane joined by a melted metal seal to a metal receiver supported on the shaft.

4. The shaft-housing of claim 3 further comprising an illumination system and an imaging system, the illumination system and imaging system disposed behind, and in optically coupled with, a single pane, the pane joined by a melted metal seal to a metal receiver supported on the shaft.

5. The shaft-housing of claim 3 further comprising an illumination system and an imaging system, the systems disposed behind a compound window comprising at least two panes combined as a single common window unit, one or more panes being dedicated to the imaging system and one or more panes being dedicated to the illumination system, the illumination system pane(s) and the imaging system pane(s) being separated from each other by an optical boundary to reduce transmission of light across the boundary between panes.

6. An endoscope according to claim 1 further comprising hermetic controls disposed on the housing portion and which do not perforate the handle housing.

7. The endoscope of claim 6 wherein the controls comprise Hall effect switches.

8. The housing portion of claim 1 wherein the housing portion is adapted to releasably attach to an endoscope.

9. The housing portion of claim 8 wherein the housing portion includes an imaging system comprising at least one image sensor.

10. The housing portion of claim 9 further comprising an electrical connector comprising electrical leads disposed in a melted glass formed in a metal opening in the housing portion.

11. The housing portion of claim 9 further comprising hermetic controls disposed on the housing portion and which do not perforate the handle housing.

12. The housing portion of claim 9 further comprising a windowed closure comprising a metal material and having at least a first receiver for at least one pane for at least one of an imaging system and illumination system, and one or more panes are disposed in the receiver and joined to it by a melted metal seal, the housing portion being adapted to couple to the proximal end portion of an endoscope shaft so that the pane optically aligns with an optical element in a proximal end portion of the endoscope.

13. A housing portion for an endoscope for housing a component for the endoscope, the housing portion comprising at least two dissimilar metallic sections joined by a solid-state welding process to form a hermetic seal;

wherein the housing comprises a first section comprising a first metal, and a second section adjacent the first section, and the second section comprising a second metal weldably dissimilar to the first metal, the first section and second sections joined by a solid-state welding technique to form a hermetic seal, and wherein the housing portion includes at least one of an electronic component of an imaging system and an illumination system, wherein the component for the imaging system comprises an image sensor and the component for the illumination system comprises an LED light source;

wherein the dissimilar metals are selected from a group of aluminum or its alloys, stainless steel or its alloys, and titanium or its alloys; and

wherein the second section comprises aluminum and at least one of the first and third section sections comprises stainless steel.
