Abstract

A computer readable medium includes executable instructions to create a first export file that defines attributes and relationships associated with a first business intelligence object. A second export file that characterizes a second business intelligence object associated with the first business intelligence object is formed. The first export file and the second export file are combined into a composite export entity. The composite export entity is distributed.

Claims (22)

1. A computer storage product with a computer readable medium, comprising executable instructions to:

create an export file for a business intelligence object at a source system;

characterize inheritance, dependency, and object hierarchy information for the business intelligence object;

retrieve objects upon which the business intelligence object depends;

identify a rule file associated with the business intelligence object, wherein the business intelligence object is further characterized by metadata of the rule file;

combine the export file, the objects and the rule file associated with the business intelligence object into a composite export object with content utilized by a target system to reconstruct the business intelligence object in the target system;

distribute the composite export object;

receive the composite export object at the target system;

reconstruct at the target system objects associated with the composite export object;

resolve dependencies associated with reconstructed objects of the composite export object; and

insert the business intelligence object into an object hierarchy within the target system that is not identical to the object hierarchy in the source system.

2. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to convert a domain-specific identifier associated with the business intelligence object to a global identifier.

3. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 2 further comprising executable instructions to compress the composite export object.

4. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the composite export object is a file.

5. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the composite export object is a group of files.

6. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to process security information.

7. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to reuse the composite export object.

8. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the files include report files, spreadsheet files, word processing files, graphics files, text files, data files or comma delimited files.

9. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the files include application specific files or program files.

10. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the composite export object is a text file.

11. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 10 wherein the text file is in an Extensible Markup Language (XML) format.

12. The computer storage product with the computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to encrypt the composite export object.
