Abstract

Bone cages are disclosed including devices for biocompatible implantation. The structures of bone are useful for providing living cells and tissues as well as biologically active molecules to subjects.

Claims (35)

1. A method of making a device for implantation in a subject, comprising:

micromachining hard bone tissue that includes a natural internal cavity therein to form an implantable structure exhibiting at least one dimension of about 30 μm to about 90 μm;

micromachining the implantable structure to re-shape the natural internal cavity thereof;

micromachining a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity; and

covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure with a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells prior to implantation of the device in the subject.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein micromachining the implantable structure to re-shape the internal cavity thereof is by focused beam machining the implantable structure.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the covering is by placing the implantable structure in the semi-permeable component.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the covering is by placing the semi-permeable component on the interior surface of the cavity in the implantable structure.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more biologically active molecules; and

providing the one or more biologically active molecules to the micromachined internal cavity.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more living cells or tissues; and

providing the one or more living cells or tissues to the micromachined internal cavity.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone is organic.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone is anorganic.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is demineralized.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is freeze-dried.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is autologous with respect to the subject.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is allogeneic with respect to the subject.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is xenogeneic with respect to the subject.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is immunogenic with respect to the subject.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hard bone tissue is non-immunogenic with respect to the subject.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: treating the hard bone tissue to at least partially prevent restructuring.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: treating the hard bone tissue to enhance restructuring.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising;

surrounding the implantable structure with the semi-permeable component.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implantable structure surrounds the semi-permeable component.

20. A method of making a device for implantation in a subject, comprising:

micromachining hard bone tissue to form an implantable structure exhibiting at least one dimension of about 30 μm to about 90 μm;

forming an internal cavity in the implantable structure;

forming a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the internal cavity; and

covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes with a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells prior to implantation of the device in the subject.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes with a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells includes covering at least a portion of an exterior of the implantable structure with the layer of confluent cells.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes with a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells includes covering at least a portion of an interior of the implantable structure with the layer of confluent cells.
