Abstract

Signature-based program identification apparatus and methods for use with digital audio and/or video systems are disclosed. The disclosed systems and methods develop signatures of digital audio and/or video content from a digital data stream at two or more sites and compare the signatures to one another to identify the content.

Claims (90)

1. A method of identifying a digital data stream having at least one of audio content or video content, comprising:

receiving a first signature associated with a content consumption site, wherein the first signature comprises a concatenation of first digital information extracted from a first non-payload portion of the digital data stream and second digital information extracted from a second non-payload portion of the digital stream;

comparing the first signature to a second signature associated with a reference site; and

identifying the digital data stream based on the comparison of the first and second signatures.

2. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first non-payload portion of the digital data stream is computed based on a payload portion of the digital data stream.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first non-payload portion of the digital data stream comprises a checksum.

4. A method as defined in claim 3 , wherein the checksum comprises a cyclical redundancy check.

5. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first non-payload portion of the digital data stream is extracted from at least one of an audio data packet or a video data packet.

6. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising receiving a time value associated with the digital information.

7. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising determining if the first signature matches the second signature.

8. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein comparing the first and second signatures includes comparing the first signature to digital signatures associated with a plurality of digital data streams, each digital data stream having at least one of digital audio content or digital video content.

9. A method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the digital signatures associated with the plurality of digital data streams are generated at the reference site.

10. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein comparing the first and second signatures includes using a time value to select the second signature from a plurality of signatures associated with the digital data stream.

11. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the digital data stream is at least one of a digital television program or a digital radio program.

12. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the digital data stream is in a format suitable for transmission via the Internet.

13. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the audio content is in a format that is compliant with an audio transmission standard.

14. A method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the audio transmission standard is compliant with at least one of AC-3, MPEG, or MPEG advanced audio coding.

15. An apparatus for identifying a digital data stream having at least one of audio content or video content, comprising:

a program consumption analyzer to:

receive a first signature associated with a content consumption site, wherein the first signature comprises a concatenation of first digital information extracted from a first non-payload portion of the digital data stream and second digital information extracted from a second non-payload portion of the digital data stream;

compare the first signature to a second signature associated with a reference site; and

identify the digital data stream based on the comparison of the first and second signatures.

16. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein each of the first and second non-payload portions of the digital data stream are computed based on respective payload portions of the digital data stream.

17. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the first digital information is extracted from at least one of an audio data packet or a video data packet.

18. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the first digital information comprises a checksum.

19. An apparatus as defined in claim 18 , wherein the checksum comprises a cyclical redundancy check.

20. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the first signature includes a time value associated with the first digital information.

21. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the program consumption analyzer is to determine if the first signature matches the second signature information.

22. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the program consumption analyzer is to compare the first and second signatures by comparing the first signature to digital signatures associated with a plurality of broadcast programs.

23. An apparatus as defined in claim 22 , wherein the digital signatures are generated at a reference site.

24. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the program consumption analyzer is to use a time value to select the second signature.

25. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the digital data stream includes at least one of a digital television program or a digital radio program.

26. A method as defined in claim 15 , wherein the digital data stream is in a format suitable for transmission via the Internet.

27. An apparatus as defined in claim 15 , wherein the audio content is in a format that is compliant with an audio transmission standard.

28. An apparatus as defined in claim 27 , wherein the audio transmission standard is compliant with at least one of AC-3, MPEG or MPEG advanced audio coding.

29. A machine readable medium, excluding propagating signals, the medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause a machine to:

receive a first signature associated with a content consumption site, wherein the first signature is comprises a concatenation of first digital information extracted from a first non-payload portion of a digital data stream associated with the content consumption site and second digital information extracted from a second non-payload portion of the digital data stream;

compare the first signature to a second signature associated with a reference site; and

identify the content based on the comparison of the first and second signatures.

30. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the content is audio content.

31. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the content is video content.

32. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein each of the first and second non-payload portions of the digital data stream are computed based on respective first and second payload portions of the digital data stream.

33. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the first digital information is extracted from at least one of an audio data packet or a video data packet.

34. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the first digital information includes a checksum.

35. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 34 , wherein the checksum comprises a cyclical redundancy check.

36. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause the machine to receive a time value associated with the first digital signature.

37. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause the machine to determine if the first signature matches the second signature.

38. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause the machine to compare the first and second signatures by comparing the first signature to digital signatures associated with a plurality of digital data streams.

39. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 38 , wherein the digital signatures are generated at the reference site.

40. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause the machine to compare the first and second signatures by using a time value to select the second signature.

41. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the content includes at least one of a digital television program or a digital radio program.

42. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the content includes content that is in a format that is suitable for transmission via the Internet.

43. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 29 , wherein the content is in a format that is compliant with an audio transmission standard.

44. A machine readable medium as defined in claim 43 , wherein the audio transmission standard is compliant with at least one of AC-3, MPEG or MPEG advanced audio coding.

45. A method of generating a signature for a digital data stream, the method comprising:

acquiring data packets associated with a digital data stream;

extracting a first digital value from a first non-payload portion of a first of the data packets;

extracting a second digital value from a second non-payload portion of a second of the data packets; and

combining the first and second digital values to form the signature.

46. A method as defined in claim 45 , further comprising associating at least one of an identifier indicative of a content contained in the digital data stream or a time value with the signature.

47. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein the first digital value is computationally related to a payload portion of the first data packet.

48. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein the digital data stream includes audio content and wherein each of the data packets is associated with the audio content.

49. A method as defined in claim 48 , wherein each of the data packets is formatted according to an audio transmission standard.

50. A method as defined in claim 49 , wherein the audio transmission standard is compliant with at least one of AC-3, MPEG or MPEG advanced audio coding.

51. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein the digital data stream includes content comprising at least one of a digital television program or a digital radio program.

52. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein the digital data stream is formatted for transmission via the Internet.

53. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein extracting the first digital value from the first non-payload portion comprises extracting a checksum.

54. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein combining the first and second digital values comprises concatenating the first and second digital values.

55. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein combining the first and second digital values comprises at least one of a logical or mathematical operation.

56. A method as defined in claim 45 , wherein the first digital value comprises a checksum.

57. An apparatus for generating signatures, comprising:

a signal processor to extract a first non-payload portion of a first data packet associated with a content comprising at least one of digital audio content or digital video content, and to extract a second non-payload portion of a second data packet associated with the content; and

a signature generator to concatenate the first and second non-payload portions to form a signature representative of the content.

58. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 including a time stamper to associate a time value with the signature.

59. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 including a program stamper to associate an identifier indicative of the content with the signature.

60. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 , wherein the first data packet is associated with audio information contained in the content.

61. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 , wherein the first data packet is formatted to comply with an audio transmission standard.

62. An apparatus as defined in claim 61 , wherein the audio transmission standard is compliant with at least one of AC-3, MPEG or MPEG advanced audio coding.

63. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 , wherein the content is a digital television program.

64. An apparatus as defined in claim 57 , wherein the first non-payload portion comprises a checksum for the first data packet.

65. An apparatus for identifying a digital television program, comprising:

a processing site; and

a database coupled to the processing site, wherein the processing site is programmed to:

receive a consumption signature associated with the digital television program from a consumption site, wherein the consumption signature comprises non-payload portions associated with two or more data packets of the digital television program;

compare the consumption signature to a plurality of reference signatures associated with the digital television program; and

identify the digital television program based on the comparison of the consumption signature and the plurality of reference signatures.

66. An apparatus as defined in claim 65 , wherein the non-payload portions of the two or more data packets are computationally related to respective payload portions of the two or more data packets.

67. An apparatus as defined in claim 65 , wherein the non-payload portions comprise checksums.

68. An apparatus as defined in claim 65 , wherein the processing site is programmed to determine if at least some of the consumption signature matches at least some of the reference signatures.

69. An apparatus as defined in claim 65 , wherein the processing site uses a program identifier associated with the plurality of reference signatures to identify the digital television program.
