Abstract

The present invention provides a voice user interface with personality. In one embodiment, a method includes executing a voice user interface, and controlling the voice user interface to provide the voice user interface with a personality. The method includes selecting a prompt based on various context situations, such as a previously selected prompt and the user's experience with using the voice user interface.

Claims (53)

1. An automated method for implementing a voice user interface with personality, comprising:

receiving a personality selection from a plurality of personalities;

defining a dialog based on the selected personality, wherein the dialog emulates human verbal behavior for the selected personality;

determining whether the dialog should be refined; and

refining the dialog responsive to a determination that the dialog should be refined.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the step of determining whether the dialog should be refined comprises:

presenting the dialog to a user; and

determining whether a required response is provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

3. The method as set forth in claim 2 , wherein the step of determining whether the dialog should be refined further comprises:

determining that the dialog should be refined if the required response is not provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the step of refining the dialog comprises:

repeating the steps of defining a dialog based on the selected personality and determining whether the dialog should be refined.

5. The method as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a voice user interface to output a first voice signal, wherein the first voice signal corresponds to a first part of the refined dialog.

6. The method as set forth in claim 5 , further comprising:

selecting a hand-off prompt between the first voice signal and a second voice signal corresponding to a second part of the refined dialog; and

outputting the first voice signal followed by the hand-off prompt and the second voice signal to the voice user interface.

7. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer program logic recorded thereon for enabling a processor to implement a voice user interface with personality, the computer program logic comprising:

receiving means for enabling the processor to receive a personality selection from a plurality of personalities;

defining means for enabling the processor to define a dialog based on the selected personality, wherein the dialog emulates human verbal behavior for the selected personality;

first determining means for enabling the processor to determine whether the dialog should be refined; and

refining means for enabling the processor to refine the dialog responsive to a determination that the dialog should be refined.

8. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the determining means comprises:

presenting means for enabling the processor to present the dialog to a user; and

second determining means for enabling the processor to determine whether a required response is provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

9. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the determining means further comprises:

third determining means for enabling the processor to determine tat the dialog should be refined if the required response is not provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

10. The computer program pro duct of claim 7 , wherein the refining means comprises:

repeating means for enabling the processor to define a dialog based on the selected personality, to determine whether the dialog should be refined, and to refine the dialog until it is determined that the dialog should not be refined.

11. The computer program product of claim 7 , further comprising:

providing means for enabling the processor to provide a voice user interface to output a first voice signal, wherein the first voice signal corresponds to a first part of the refined dialog.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 , further comprising:

selecting means for enabling the processor to select a hand-off prompt between the first voice signal and a second voice signal corresponding to a second part of the refined dialog; and

outputting means for enabling the processor to output the first voice signal followed by the hand-off prompt and the second voice signal in the voice user interface.

13. A system for implementing a voice user interface with personality, the system comprising:

a memory having:

logic to receive a personality selection from a plurality of personalities;

logic to define a dialog based on the selected personality, wherein the dialog emulates human verbal behavior for the selected personality;

logic to determine whether the dialog should be refined; and

logic to refine the dialog responsive to a determination that the dialog should be refined; and

a processor operable to process logic within the memory.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the logic to determine whether the dialog should be refined comprises:

logic to present the dialog to a user; and

logic to determine whether a required response is provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the logic to determine whether the dialog should be refined further comprises:

logic to determine that the dialog should be refined if the required response is not provided by the user when the dialog is presented to the user.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the logic to refine the dialog comprises:

logic to define a dialog based on the rejected personality, to determine whether the dialog should be refined, and to refine the dialog until it is determined that the dialog should not be refined.

17. The system of claim 13 , the memory further having:

logic to provide a voice user interface to output a first voice signal, wherein the first voice signal corresponds to a first part of the refined dialog.

18. The system of claim 17 , the memory further having:

logic to select a hand-off prompt between the first voice signal and a second voice signal corresponding to a second part of the refined dialog; and

logic to output the first voice signal followed by the band-off prompt and the second voice signal to the voice user interface.
