Abstract

Disclosed herein is an attenuation device, comprising a flexible housing and a high vapor pressure media having a vapor pressure approximately equal to the intravesical pressure of the bladder and a permeability of less than 1 ml/day at body temperature through the outer wall of the flexible housing. In one embodiment, the high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorooctylbromide. In another embodiment, the high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorohexane. In yet another embodiment, the high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorodecalin. Also disclosed herein is a method of treating a patient, comprising providing a compressible attenuation device and introducing within the attenuation device at least one high vapor pressure media.

Claims (27)

1. A therapeutic device, comprising:

a flexible housing comprising an outer wall and defining a chamber therein, the housing configured to be positioned within an anatomical structure while in a first, introduction configuration and then at least partially inflated into a second, implanted configuration; and

at least one high vapor pressure media having a vapor pressure approximately equal to the pressure within the anatomical structure and a permeability of less than 1 ml/day at body temperature through said outer wall.

2. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises heptafluoropropane.

3. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorooctylbromide.

4. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorohexane.

5. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorodecalin.

6. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises tetrafluoroethane.

7. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises sulfur hexafluoride.

8. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises hexafluoroethane.

9. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluoropropane.

10. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorobutane.

11. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluoropentane.

12. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluoroheptane.

13. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluorooctane.

14. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises octafluoropropane.

15. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises decafluoro-n-butane.

16. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media comprises perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene.

17. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein said high vapor pressure media is a liquid at body temperature.

18. A therapeutic device as in claim 17 , wherein the density of said high vapor pressure media is greater than that of the urine.

19. A therapeutic device as in claim 18 , wherein the degree to which said high vapor pressure media counteracts the buoyancy of any gas in the attenuation device is determined by the amount of said high vapor pressure media in the attenuation device.

20. A therapeutic device as in claim 19 , wherein the reduced buoyancy of the attenuation device results in reduced pressure on the bladder's mucosal surface.

21. A therapeutic device as in claim 1 , wherein the housing is configured to be positioned within a patient's bladder while in the introduction configuration and then at least partially inflated into a second, implanted configuration within the bladder.

22. A therapeutic device, comprising;

a flexible housing comprising an outer wall and defining a chamber therein, the housing configured to be introduced into a bladder of a patient; and

at least one high vapor pressure media having a vapor pressure approximately equal to the intravesical pressure of the bladder and a permeability of less than 1 ml/day at body temperature through said outer wall.

23. A therapeutic device as in claim 21 , the media causing a volume of a first gas to be driven through the housing until the partial pressure of the first gas inside the housing matches the partial pressure of the first gas within the bladder.
