Abstract

In certain example embodiments of this invention, a window unit may include a vacuum IG (VIG) unit as an inboard lite and a monolithic lite (e.g., with an optional low-E coating thereon) as an outboard lite. A dead air space may separate the inboard and outboard lites. A highly insulated frame may be used to support the inner and outer lites. The VIG unit may be partially embedded or supported in the insulative frame, so that the insulating frame separates the VIG unit inboard lite from the outboard lite thereby reducing conductivity around the edges of the window unit so that R-value can be increased (and U-value decreased). In certain example embodiments, the total R-value of the window unit is at least about R-8, and more preferably at least about R-10 (compared to the much lower R-values of conventional IG units).

Claims (22)

1. A vacuum window unit comprising:

first, second and third spaced apart glass substrates, wherein a first low pressure space having pressure less than atmospheric pressure is located between the first and second glass substrates, and a second space is located between the second and third glass substrates, the second glass substrate being located between the first and third glass substrates,

a plurality of spacers disposed in the first low pressure space; and

wherein the second glass substrate has a greater thickness than thickness(es) of the first and third glass substrates;

wherein first and second low-emissivity coatings are provided respectively on surfaces of the first and third glass substrates that face the second substrate;

wherein the first and second glass substrates are the same size, and wherein the first and second glass substrates are larger in size than is the third glass substrate, and

wherein a sash comprising foam is located between the second and third glass substrates, but is not located between the first and second glass substrates.

2. The window unit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one hermetic edge seal located between the first and second glass substrates.

3. The vacuum window unit of claim 1 , wherein the second glass substrate is at least twice as thick as the first and third glass substrates.

4. The vacuum window unit of claim 1 , wherein the second glass substrate is located closer to the first glass substrate than it is to the third glass substrate.

5. The vacuum window unit of claim 1 , wherein the first low pressure space has a pressure of equal to or below about 0.5×10 −3 Torr.

6. The vacuum window unit of claim 1 , further comprising phase change material (PCM) mounted adjacent an interior side of the window, wherein the phase change material is for absorbing heat during sunny conditions and slowly releasing heat during at least cold night time conditions, wherein the phase change material changes phase in a temperature range of from about 50 to 120 degrees F.

7. An insulating window unit comprising:

first, second and third spaced apart glass sheets, wherein a first space having pressure less than atmospheric pressure is located between the first and second glass sheets, and a second space is located between the second and third glass sheets, the second glass sheet being located between the first and third glass sheets,

a plurality of spacers disposed in at least the first space; and

wherein the second glass sheet has a greater thickness than thickness(es) of the first and third glass sheets;

wherein first and second low-emissivity coatings are provided respectively on surfaces of the first and third glass sheets that face the second glass sheet; and

wherein insulation is located between the second and third glass substrates, but is not located between the first and second glass substrates.

8. The window unit of claim 7 , further comprising at least one hermetic edge seal comprising solder glass located between the first and second glass sheets.

9. The window unit of claim 7 , wherein the second glass sheet is at least twice as thick as the first and third glass sheets.

10. The window unit of claim 7 , wherein the second glass sheet is located closer to the first glass sheet than it is to the third glass sheet.

11. The window unit of claim 7 , further comprising phase change material (PCM) mounted adjacent an interior side of the window, wherein the phase change material is for absorbing heat during sunny conditions and slowly releasing heat during at least cold night time conditions, wherein the phase change material changes phase in a temperature range of from about 50 to 120 degrees F.
