Tissue penetration device
View Patent ↗In one embodiment of the present invention a lancet is provided that has a sharpened distal tip, a shaft portion and a proximal drive head. The proximal drive head has a transverse dimension that is substantially larger than a transverse dimension of the shaft portion adjacent to the proximal drive head.
1. A lancet module comprising
a lancet channel formed within a module body portion;
a lancet configured to be mechanically registered and coupled to a controllable force lancet driver;
a sample chamber coupled to the lancet channel;
wherein the lancet has a sharpened distal tip, a shaft portion and a drive head, the shaft portion being slidably disposed and free to slide within the lancet channel;
wherein the lancet channel has a proximal end, a distal end, a series of lancet bearing guides configured to fit closely with a shaft of the lancet and confine the lancet to substantially axial movement, the lancet bearing guides includes a proximal lancet bearing guide and a distal lancet guide;
a proximal fracturable seal positioned between a proximal lancet bearing guide and the shaft portion of the lancet that seals the sample; and
a distal fracturable seal disposed between the lancet and the distal lancet guide to seal a distal end of the lancet channel and a sample input port.
2. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the sharpened distal tip of the lancet is withdrawn into the lancet channel when the lancet is in a retracted position and the sharpened distal tip extending beyond a distal end of the lancet module when the lancet is in an extended position.
3. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the module body portion is comprised of a polymer.
4. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the module body portion has a length of about 0.5 to about 2 inch and a major transverse dimension of about 0.1 to about 0.5 inch.
5. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the module body portion is comprised of PMMA.
6. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the module body portion is substantially rectangular in shape and comprises a recess configured to be engaged by a ratchet drive mechanism.
7. The lancet module of claim 1 , wherein the module body portion further comprises a lancet drive head slot disposed between a first protective strut and a second protective strut of the module body portion.
8. The lancet module of claim 7 , wherein the first and second protective struts comprise elongated protective struts extending substantially parallel to the lancet.
