Abstract

A method of adjusting a power level of communications over a channel in a wireless communications network. In the method, a determination (e.g., by a radio network controller (RNC)) is made regarding a number of base stations actively communicating with a mobile station. For example, the determination may indicate whether the mobile station is engaged in soft handoff or simplex mode. One of a plurality of power control algorithms (e.g., a fixed offset power control algorithm, a channel quality indicator (CQI) power control algorithm, etc.) is selected based on the determination. A power level of communications over the channel (e.g., a downlink communications channel to the mobile station) is then adjusted in accordance with the selected power control algorithm.

Claims (28)

1. A method of adjusting a power level of communications over a channel between a mobile station and a base station in a wireless communications network, comprising:

determining whether the mobile station is engaged in a soft handoff;

selecting one of a plurality of power control algorithms based on the results of the determining step;

selecting a fixed offset power control algorithm as the power control algorithm if the determining step determines the mobile station is not engaged in a soft handoff; and

adjusting the power level of the communications over the channel in accordance with the selected power control algorithm,

wherein the selecting step selects a channel quality indicator (CQI) power control algorithm as the power control algorithm if the determining step determines the mobile station is engaged in a soft handoff.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting in accordance with the fixed offset power control algorithm comprises:

determining a power level of communications over a dedicated channel between the mobile station and the base station;

determining a fixed offset in accordance with the fixed offset power control algorithm; and

adding the fixed offset to the determined power level.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the dedicated channel is a downlink dedicated channel.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the dedicated channel is one of a dedicated physical channel (DPCH) in and a high-speed dedicated physical control channel (HS-DPCCH).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel is a shared control channel.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting in accordance with the CQI power control algorithm comprises:

receiving, from the mobile station, a CQI associated with the communications over the channel.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the adjusting step adjusts the power level of the communications over the channel based on the received CQI.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the adjusting step increases the power level of the communications over the channel if the CQI indicates a channel quality below a channel quality threshold.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the adjusting step decreases the power level of the communications over the channel if the CQI indicator indicates a channel quality greater than or equal to a channel quality threshold.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel is a shared control channel in a downlink with respect to the base station and the mobile station.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining step determines the mobile station is engaged in soft handoff if the base station is one of a plurality of base stations actively communicating with the mobile station.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the base station is a serving base station from among the plurality of base stations and the channel is only established between the mobile station and the serving base station.

13. A method of adjusting a power level of communications over a channel between a mobile station and a base station in a wireless communications network, comprising:

determining whether the mobile station is engaged in a soft handoff;

selecting one of a plurality of power control algorithms based on the results of the determining step; and

adjusting the power level of the communications over the channel in accordance with the selected power control algorithm;

wherein the selecting step selects one of a fixed offset power control algorithm and a channel quality indicator (CQI) power control algorithm;

wherein the adjusting step includes determining a power level of communications over a dedicated channel between the mobile station and the base station, determining a fixed offset in accordance with the fixed offset power control algorithm and adding the fixed offset to the determined power level to adjust the power level of the communications over the channel if the selecting step selects the fixed offset power control algorithm and

the adjusting step includes receiving, from the mobile station, a CQI associated with the communications over the channel and adjusting the power level of the communications over the channel based on the received CQI if the selecting step selects the CQI power control algorithm.
