Abstract

An IPS mode LCD device and a method for fabricating the same are disclosed. A switching device is formed at each unit pixel and then a passivation layer is formed thereon. A first concave pattern and a second concave pattern at each unit pixel by using one mask are formed, and a common electrode is formed in the first concave pattern and a pixel electrode is formed in the second concave pattern. Accordingly, the entire fabrication process is simplified.

Claims (28)

1. An in plane switching (IPS) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) device, comprising:

a unit pixel defined by a plurality of gate lines and a plurality of data lines crossing the gate lines;

a common electrode line disposed in the unit pixel;

a switching device formed in a vicinity of an intersection between the gate lines and the data lines and disposed in the unit pixel;

a passivation layer for covering the unit pixel;

at least one first concave pattern formed in the unit pixel that exposes the common electrode line;

at least one second concave pattern formed in the unit pixel that exposes a drain electrode of the switching device,

wherein a common electrode electrically connected to the common electrode line is disposed in the first concave pattern, and

wherein a pixel electrode electrically connected to the drain electrode of the switching device is disposed in the second concave pattern.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pixel electrode and the common electrode are parallel with each other.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pixel electrode and the common electrode are insulated by an overcoat layer disposed in the first concave pattern and the second concave pattern.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the overcoat layer is hardened.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a storage line in the unit pixel.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the drain electrode overlaps with the storage line with an insulating layer disposed therebetween.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first concave pattern and the second concave pattern are formed by cutting a gate insulating layer and the passivation layer formed in the unit pixel.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the common electrode is electrically connected to the common electrode line to a portion of the common electrode line exposed by the first concave pattern.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the drain electrode to a portion of the drain electrode exposed by the second concave pattern.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the switching device comprises:

a gate electrode branching from the gate line;

a source electrode branching from the data line;

the drain electrode extended to correspond to overlap with the storage line; and

an active layer disposed between the source electrode and the drain electrode.

11. An in-plane switching LCD device, comprising: a storage line disposed in a unit pixel of the LCD device, the storage line configured to provide a storage voltage; a switching device disposed in the unit pixel, the switching device including a drain electrode configured to provide a data signal to a pixel electrode, wherein a portion of the drain electrode overlaps the storage line in the unit pixel to form a storage capacitor; a common electrode and a pixel electrode disposed in the unit pixel; a first concave area formed over the sudstrate in the unit pixel occupied by the common electrode; a second concave area formed over the substrate in the unit pixel occupied by the pixel electrode; and an insulating layer disposed over a substrate in the unit pixel except in the first and second concave areas, wherein the common and pixel electrodes apply a horizontal electric field in conjunction with the other.

12. The device of claim 11 , further comprising an overcoat layer disposed over the common electrode in the first concave area and over the pixel electrode in the second concave area.

13. An in-plane switching LCD device, comprising:

a common electrode disposed in a first concave pattern in a unit pixel, wherein the first concave pattern exposes a portion of a common electrode line such that the common electrode branches from and electrically connects with the common electrode line, wherein the common and pixel electrodes apply a horizontal electric field in conjunction with each other;

a pixel electrode disposed in a second concave pattern in the unit pixel, wherein the second concave pattern exposes a portion of a drain electrode of a switching device such that the pixel electrode electrically connects with the drain electrode; and

a storage line disposed in the unit pixel, wherein a portion of the drain electrode of the switching device extends over the storage line to form a storage capacitor.
