Abstract

An array substrate of an LCD and a fabricating method thereof are provided. A first insulating layer is formed on the substrate. A TFT and a hardened liquid crystal layer are provided in a pixel region of the substrate. A second insulating layer is formed in the pixel region around the hardened liquid crystal layer such that the second insulating layer and the hardened liquid crystal layer are substantially planar. A first alignment layer is formed between the hardened liquid crystal layer and the first insulating layer. A pixel electrode is formed on the second insulating layer and the hardened liquid crystal layer and contacts a drain region of the TFT through a hole in the first insulating layer. A second alignment layer is formed on the entire substrate over the second insulating layer and the hardened liquid crystal layer.

Claims (19)

1. An array substrate of an liquid crystal display device (LCD), comprising:

a substrate having a pixel region and a thin film transistor (TFT) provided in the pixel region;

a first insulating layer on the substrate;

a hardened liquid crystal layer in the pixel region, the hardened liquid crystal layer containing a reactive liquid crystal;

a second insulating layer substantially planar with the hardened liquid crystal layer;

a pixel electrode electrically connected to the TFT on the hardened liquid crystal layer, the pixel electrode being disposed on the hardened liquid crystal layer; and

a first alignment layer is disposed on the first insulation layer in the pixel region; and

a second alignment layer to align a liquid crystal layer is disposed on the pixel electrode and on the second insulating layer,

wherein the hardened liquid crystal layer is disposed on the first alignment layer in the pixel region,

wherein the hardened liquid crystal layer and the first alignment layer are wholly covered by the pixel electrode in the pixel region,

wherein the hardened liquid crystal layer is disposed between the first alignment layer and the pixel electrode.

2. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the first insulating layer comprises an inorganic insulating layer.

3. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the second insulating layer comprises an organic insulating layer.

4. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the second insulating layer comprises a photosensitive organic insulating layer.

5. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the second insulating layer to being formed of photo acryl or benzocyclobutene (BCB).

6. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the hardened liquid crystal layer includes a reactive mesogen.

7. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the second insulating layer and the hardened liquid crystal layer do not overlap each other.

8. The array substrate according to claim 1 , further comprising the second alignment layer on an entire region of the substrate where the hardened liquid crystal layer and the second insulating layer are formed.

9. The array substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the hardened liquid crystal layer comprises a photosensitive liquid crystal.
