Abstract

Systems and methods for monitoring a user's viewing progress of media in a series are provided. The user may setup a media profile containing a list of program series to be monitored. The interactive media monitoring application may track the user's viewing progress of programs in the program series on the user equipment and update the user's media profile. The user may request and watch programs in the series at the user's leisure while peripheral media content may be filtered to be consistent with the user's viewing progress in the series.

creating a media profile comprising the user's current viewing progress in at least one series of related programs;

storing the media profile;

determining whether a program within the at least one series has been presented to the user; and

updating the user's current viewing progress in the media profile in response to determining that the program within the at least one series has been presented to the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

replacing media content to be presented to the user that is inconsistent with the user's current viewing progress in the at least one series.

3 . The method of claim 2 wherein the replacing media content comprises comparing the user's current viewing progress with data associated with the inconsistent media content.

4 . The method of claim 2 wherein the replacing media content comprises comparing the user's current viewing progress with data associated with the media content to replace the inconsistent media content.

5 . The method of claim 2 wherein the media content is selected from the group consisting of advertising, news segments, and web content.

6 . The method of claim 2 wherein the media content is replaced with media content that is consistent with the user's current viewing progress.

7 . The method of claim 2 wherein the media content is replaced in real-time.

8 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

connecting the user to a network-based community associated with the user's current viewing progress in the at least one series.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein the network-based community is a real-time interactive community.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the media profile record is stored on a network storage device so that the media profile record may be accessed by a plurality of user equipment.

11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one series of related programs is selected from the group consisting of a sporting event series, a broadcast television series, a set of movie sequels, a game show series, a news series, an educational series, a reality television series, and a cartoon series.

12 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying a summary of the program within the at least one series to the user.

13 . The method of claim 1 further comprising creating a second media profile comprising a second user's current viewing progress in at least one series of related programs.

14 . A system for monitoring a user's viewing progress of a series of related programs on user equipment, the system comprising:

a memory for storing at least one media profile;

control circuitry for monitoring a user's viewing progress, wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

create a media profile comprising the user's current viewing progress in at least one series of related programs;

store the media profile in the memory;

determine whether a program within the at least one series has been presented to the user; and

update the user's current viewing progress in the media profile in response to determining that the program within the at least one series has been presented to the user.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

replace media content to be presented to the user that is inconsistent with the user's current viewing progress in the at least one series.

16 . The system of claim 15 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

compare the user's current viewing progress with data associated with the inconsistent media content.

17 . The system of claim 15 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

compare the user's current viewing progress with data associated with the media content to replace the inconsistent media content.

18 . The system of claim 15 wherein the media content is selected from the group consisting of advertising, news segments, and web content.

19 . The system of claim 15 wherein the media content is replaced with media content that is consistent with the user's current viewing progress.

20 . The system of claim 15 wherein the media content is replaced in real-time.

21 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

connect the user to a network-based community associated with the user's current viewing progress in the at least one series.

22 . The system of claim 21 wherein the network-based community is a real-time interactive community.

23 . The system of claim 14 wherein the memory is resident on a network so that the media profile record may be accessed by a plurality of user equipment.

24 . The system of claim 14 wherein the memory stores more than one user profile corresponding to more than one user accessing the user equipment.

25 . The system of claim 14 wherein the at least one series of related programs is selected from the group consisting of a sporting event series, a broadcast television series, a movie series, a game show series, a news series, an educational series, a reality television series, and a cartoon series.

26 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

display a summary of the program within the at least one series to the user.

27 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

create a second media profile comprising a second user's current viewing progress in at least one series of related programs.

28 . A method for replacing media content with substitute content, the method comprising:

tracking a user's viewing progress through at least one series of related programs;

locating media content relating to unwatched programs in the at least one series of related programs; and

replacing at least one of the located media content with content relating to watched programs in the at least one series of related programs.

29 . The method of claim 28 wherein the locating media content relating to unwatched programs comprises comparing the user's viewing progress to episode data associated with the media content.

30 . The method of claim 28 wherein the replacing at least one of the located media content comprises comparing the user's viewing progress to episode data associated with the media content relating to watched programs in the at least one series of related programs.

31 . The method of claim 28 wherein the media content relating to unwatched programs is selected from the group consisting of advertising, news segments, and web content.
