Abstract

Medical devices, for example, implantable devices such as endoprostheses, include a composite material having a polymer.

Claims (7)

1. An endoprosthesis, comprising:

a tubular member having

a first layer including a first polymer matrix encapsulating a plurality of fibers in the first polymer matrix, the fibers having a stiffness greater than stiffness of the first polymer matrix and having lengths in the range of about 0.01 to about 10 millimeters, and being oriented in a first predetermined direction, the first polymer matrix being stable in body fluids; and

a second layer including a second polymer matrix encapsulating a plurality of fibers in the second polymer matrix, the fibers having a stiffness greater than the stiffness of the second polymer matrix, having lengths in the range of about 0.01 to about 10 millimeters, and being oriented in a second predetermined direction, the second predetermined direction being different than the first predetermined direction, the second polymer matrix being stable in body fluids.

2. The endoprosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the first and second polymer matrixes comprise the same polymer.

3. The endoprosthesis of claim 1 , wherein fibers in both the first polymer matrix and the second polymer matrix have lengths in the range of about 1 to about 10 millimeters.

4. The endoprosthesis of claim 1 , wherein fibers in both the first polymer matrix and the second polymer matrix have lengths in the range of about 1 to about 5 millimeters.
