Inkjet printhead having low pressure ink ejection zone
View Patent ↗An inkjet printhead is provided comprising ink ejection nozzles arranged to eject ink from respective ink chambers onto media through respective apertures of the ink chambers and respective passages spaced from the apertures, and a fluid director arranged to direct a fluid into the space between the apertures and passages so as to pass through the passages. The fluid director is configured to direct the fluid into the space so that a fluid pressure within the space is less than a fluid pressure within the space without the fluid.
1. An inkjet printhead comprising:
a plurality of ink ejection nozzles, each nozzle arranged to eject ink from a respective nozzle chamber onto media through a respective nozzle opening of the nozzle chamber and a respective passage spaced from the nozzle opening; and
an inlet opening arranged to direct a fluid into a space between the nozzle openings and passages so as to pass through the passages,
wherein the inlet opening is configured to direct the fluid into the space so that a pressure within the space is less than a pressure within the space without the fluid.
2. A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein:
the ink ejection nozzles are configured to eject the ink through the nozzle openings and passages at a first velocity;
the inlet opening is configured to direct the fluid into the space and through the passages at a second velocity; and
the second velocity is less than the first velocity.
3. A printhead according to claim 2 , wherein the first velocity is three metres per second.
4. A printhead according to claim 3 , wherein the second velocity is one metre per second.
5. A printhead according to claim 2 , wherein the second velocity is one metre per second.
6. A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein the passages are defined in a body which is arranged to cover the nozzles and the space is provided between the body and the nozzle openings by a support member arranged to support the body on the nozzles.
7. A printhead according to claim 6 , wherein the support member incorporates a pair of spaced struts which support the body on the nozzles.
8. A printhead according to claim 7 , wherein the inlet opening is located in one of the struts.
9. A printhead according to claim 8 , wherein the strut having the inlet opening is remote from an electrical connector of the nozzles.
10. A printhead according to claim 6 , wherein the body is formed of silicon.
