Inkjet printhead assembly with a thermal expansion equalization mechanism
View Patent ↗An inkjet printhead assembly includes a support member that defines a number of ink reservoirs. A printhead is mounted on the support member to receive ink from the reservoirs. The support member has a core element that defines the ink reservoirs and a shell enclosing the core element. The shell has an effective coefficient of thermal expansion substantially equal to that of the printhead.
1. An inkjet printhead assembly that comprises
a support member that defines a number of ink reservoirs; and
a printhead mounted on the support member to receive ink from the reservoirs, wherein
the support member has a core element that defines the ink reservoirs and a shell enclosing the core element, the shell having an effective coefficient of thermal expansion substantially equal to that of the printhead.
2. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the shell is a laminate formed from at least three metals.
3. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 2 , in which the shell has a layer of a first metal interposed between two layers of a second metal.
4. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 3 , in which the printhead includes a silicon-based printhead integrated circuit and the metals are selected so that said effective coefficient of thermal expansion is substantially the same as that of silicon.
5. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 4 , in which the first metal is Invar.
6. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 3 , in which the laminate is a hot rolled laminate.
7. An inkjet printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the core element is in the form of an extrusion.
