Abstract

Reactive fire suppression transport agents may be used to release catalytic fire suppression agents, in reaction zones, which may then be transported by naturally occurring flows paths downstream to the vicinity of flame holding regions for fire suppression for example, in aircraft. The reactive fire suppression agents may be delivered in projectiles.

Claims (38)

1. A fire suppression system, comprising:

a jet engine having a source of fuel, an engine air intake and an outlet through which a combusted air fuel mixture is exhausted at a high speed along a first flow path to apply thrust;

a streamlined enclosure forming a volume around the jet engine, the volume having at least one air intake and a second flow path along which air flows at a lower speed through the volume when the jet engine is producing thrust;

a reactive agent;

a reaction zone in which the reactive agent reacts to produce a catalytic fire suppressing agent; and

an injection point for selectively releasing the reactive agent for contact with the reaction zone so that the catalytic fire suppressing agent is transported by the second air flow path to suppress a fire,

wherein the transported catalytic fire suppressing agent includes at least a sufficient quantity of a catalytic species to catalytically extinguish a fire separated from the reaction zone by the second air flow path.

2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the volume formed by the streamlined enclosure further comprises:

a nacelle.

3. The invention of claim 1 wherein the catalytic species is transported to at least one area of recirculation in the volume.

4. The invention of claim 1 wherein the catalytic fire suppressing agent is transported to at least one flame attachment area along the second flow path.

5. The invention of claim 4 wherein the catalytic fire suppressing agent is transported to two flame attachment areas along the second flow path.

6. The invention of claim 4 wherein the catalytic fire suppressing agent is transported to two flame attachment areas along portions of the second flow path and portions of a third flow path in the volume.

7. The invention of claim 1 further comprising:

a second injection point selected to cause the catalytic species to be transported by the second flow path to suppress fire in the volume.

8. The invention of claim 1 further comprising:

at least one fire detector positioned in a flame attachment area along the second flow path.

9. The invention of claim 1 wherein the injection point further comprising:

an injection point selected by measurement of the transport, along the second flow path, of a test agent having similar transport characteristics to the catalytic species.

10. The invention of claim 1 wherein the reactive agent reacts chemically or physically in the vicinity of the injection point to produce the catalytic species.

11. A non-flooding fire suppression system, comprising:

an injection point in the vicinity of an air path along which air naturally flows adjacent a jet engine during operation of the jet engine;

a source of a reactive agent which reacts to form chemical species that catalytically interfere with flame chemistry; and

a control system for injecting the reactive agent through the injection point to form the chemical species for transport by the air path to catalytically suppress fire along the air path,

wherein at least a sufficient quantity of the chemical species to catalytically extinguish a fire is transported along the natural air path from the injection point to the fire.

12. The invention of claim 11 wherein the reactive agent reacts with chemicals encountered upstream from the fire to form the chemical species that catalytically interfere with flame chemistry.

13. The invention of claim 12 wherein the reactive agent reacts with water vapor upstream of the fire to form the chemical species.

14. The invention of claim 12 wherein the reactive agent produces the chemical species by hydrolysis.

15. The invention of claim 1 wherein the second flow path occurs naturally during operation of the jet engine.

16. The invention of claim 1 wherein the reactive agent produces the catalytic species by hydrolysis in the reaction zone.

17. The invention of claim 1 wherein the catalytic species produced by contact between the reactive agent and the reaction zone include bromine radicals.

18. The invention of claim 1 wherein the reactive agent is a labile bromide.

19. The invention of claim 18 wherein the reactive agent is PBr 3 .

20. A non-flooding fire suppression system, comprising:

an injection point in the vicinity of an air path along which air naturally flows adjacent a jet engine during operation of the jet engine;

a source of a reactive agent which reacts in a reaction zone to form a chemical species that catalytically interferes with flame chemistry; and

a control system for injecting the reactive agent through the injection point to the reaction zone, and

wherein at least a sufficient portion of the chemical species is transported by the air path to a flame holding region separated from the reaction zone to catalytically suppress a fire at the flame holding region, the reaction zone located upstream from the flame holding region.
