Abstract

Provided herein are nutraceutical compositions with antioxidant properties. Also provided are methods of using polysaccharides for applications such as reducing inflammation, providing oxidation in mammalian tissue, and other uses. Also provided are algae capable of incorporating exogenously provided monosaccharides into polysaccharides synthesized in vivo to aid in antioxidant activity.

26 . A method of producing a nutraceutical composition comprising:

a. culturing red microalgae;

b. separating the microalgae from culture media; and

c. disrupting the microalgae to produce a homogenate.

28 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising formulating the homogenate with a carrier suitable for human consumption.

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the carrier is a plant or animal product.

30 . The method of claim 28 , further comprising formulating the homogenate with a carrier suitable for human oral consumption as a tablet.

32 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the disruption is performed by a method selected from the group consisting of pressure disruption, sonication, jet milling and ball milling.

33 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the red microalgae is of the species Porphyridium.

42 . A nutraceutical composition comprising homogenized red microalgae cells and a carrier suitable for human consumption.

48 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the homogenized red microalgae cells contain at least two times the amount of solvent-available polysaccharide present in a quantity of unhomogenized cells needed to generate the homogenized red microalgae cells.

49 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the homogenized red microalgae cells contain at least five times the amount of solvent-available polysaccharide present in a quantity of unhomogenized cells needed to generate the homogenized red microalgae cells.

50 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the homogenized red microalgae cells contain at least twenty times the amount of solvent-available polysaccharide present in a quantity of unhomogenized cells needed to generate the homogenized red microalgae cells.

51 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the red microalgae cells are of the genus Porphyridium.

56 . The composition of claim 51 , wherein the average molecular weight of a polysaccharide in the composition is less than 200,000 Daltons.

57 . The composition of claim 51 , further comprising beta glucan.

60 . The composition of claim 51 , further comprising a plant phytosterol.

61 . A method of treating or effecting prophylaxis of a mammal having or at risk of an undesired inflammatory response comprising administering a polysaccharide produced by microalgae to the mammal and thereby treating or effecting prophylaxis of the mammal.

64 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the polysaccharide is produced by a microalgae listed in Table 1.

65 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the microalgae is of the genus Porphyridium.

74 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the red microalgae cells are isolated from a culture containing at least 100 mM sulfate.

75 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the red microalgae cells are isolated from a culture containing at least 125 mM sulfate.

76 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the red microalgae cells are isolated from a culture containing at least 175 mM sulfate.
