Abstract

A liquid crystal dispensing apparatus dispenses liquid crystal onto a substrate. The liquid crystal dispensing apparatus includes a frame, a table, at least one liquid crystal discharge device, and a liquid crystal amount inspecting portion. The table is installed on the frame to have the substrate to be mounted thereon. The liquid crystal discharge device adjustably discharges an amount of liquid crystal, and the liquid crystal amount inspecting portion inspects a liquid crystal dispensing amount by comparing an actual amount of liquid crystal discharged from the liquid crystal discharge device with a preset liquid crystal amount. The liquid crystal discharge device includes a piston to perform ascending motions to draw in the liquid crystal and descending motions to discharge the liquid crystal with an angle of at least a portion of the liquid crystal discharge device determining a magnitude of the ascending/descending motion to control an amount of liquid crystal discharged.

Claims (24)

1. A method for fabricating a liquid crystal display (LCD) device, comprising:

providing a first substrate and a second substrate;

providing liquid crystal on the first substrate, wherein providing the liquid crystal on the first substrate includes:

calculating a preset amount of liquid crystal to be dispensed from a liquid crystal discharge device;

measuring an amount of liquid crystal dispensed from the liquid crystal discharge device and comparing the measured amount of liquid crystal with the present amount;

adjusting an amount of liquid crystal to be dispensed from the liquid crystal discharge device on a basis of said comparing by rotating a rotational shaft connected to a motor to vary an angle of a portion of the liquid crystal discharge device;

moving a substrate relative to the liquid crystal discharge device so that the liquid crystal discharge device is positioned at a dispensing position; and

dispensing the adjusted amount of liquid crystal onto the substrate by performing a pumping;

attaching the first and second substrates together.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein, during the dispensing step, a piston of the liquid crystal discharge device performs an ascending motion to draw in the liquid crystal and a descending motion to discharge the liquid crystal, a magnitude of the ascending/descending motion controlling the amount of liquid crystal discharged and the magnitude being controlled in accordance with an angle of the piston relative to a body portion of the liquid crystal discharge device.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the liquid crystal discharge device further includes an arm member projected from the piston and mated with the body, and wherein the dispensing step includes rotating the body portion so that the arm member effects the ascending/descending motion of the piston.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the calculating to adjusting steps include the steps of:

dispensing liquid crystal into a measuring member;

measuring an amount of liquid crystal dispensed into the measuring member;

comparing the measured liquid crystal amount with a preset liquid crystal amount; and

adjusting dispensing characteristics of the liquid crystal discharge device if the determined liquid crystal amount is different from the calculated liquid crystal amount.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein, during the dispensing step, a piston of the liquid crystal discharge device performs ascending motions to draw in the liquid crystal and descending motions to discharge the liquid crystal, a magnitude of the ascending/descending motion controlling the amount of liquid crystal discharged and the magnitude being controlled in accordance with an angle of the piston relative to a body portion of the liquid crystal discharge device.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the adjusting step includes the step of varying the angle of the piston relative to the body portion of the liquid crystal discharge device.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the adjusting step includes the step of controlling a liquid crystal capacity of the liquid crystal discharge device using a motor to vary the angle of the piston relative to the body portion of the liquid crystal discharge device.

8. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the adjusting step adjusts the dispensing amount of the liquid crystal discharge device such that an adjusted liquid crystal dispensing amount is substantially equal to the preset liquid crystal dispensing amount.

9. A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal dispensing method of claim 1 , comprising the steps of:

providing a first substrate;

dispensing liquid crystal onto the first substrate using the liquid crystal dispensing method; and

attaching together the first substrate and a second substrate so that liquid crystal is disposed between the first and second substrates.
