Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for performing a procedure relative to a selected portion of the anatomy, for example, preparing a portion of a joint, such as a knee, for implantation of a prosthesis. The manner of preparing the selected portion of the anatomy can be assisted with the various apparatuses disclosed.

Claims (41)

1. A system for performing a resection of a selected portion of an anatomy with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a main body operable to be fixed to the selected portion of the anatomy, the main body having a long axis and including a first guide portion defining a first guide slot and a second guide portion defining a second guide slot, the main body further having a first track portion formed along a track axis that is parallel to and offset from the long axis; and

a first sliding guide section having a first cut slot that extends along a first cut slot plane that is parallel to the long axis and a first rail, the first rail operable to slidably translate along the first track portion such that the first sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the first track portion.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second guide slots are formed along distinct and intersecting planes, wherein the first cut slot plane intersects both of the planes of the first and second guide slots.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second sliding guide section having a second cut slot that extends along a second cut slot plane that is parallel to the long axis and a second rail, the second rail operable to slidably translate along the second track portion such that the second sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the second track portion.

The system of claim 3 wherein the second track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a second positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the second rail such that the second rail is operable to slidably translate along the second track portion until coming into contact with the second positive stop.

The system of claim 1 wherein the first track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a first positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the first rail such that the first rail is operable to slidably translate along the first track portion until coming into contact with the first positive stop.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the first guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the first guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the second guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the second guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the first sliding guide section has first, second, third and fourth walls that collectively define the first cut slot.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a peg that connects one of the first, second, third and fourth walls with the first rail.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a fixation member that extends from said first member and is operable to fix said first member relative to the selected portion of the anatomy.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second fixation member moveable relative to said first member and positionable at an angle relative to said first fixation member.

12. A system for performing a resection of a selected portion of an anatomy with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a main body operable to be fixed to the selected portion of the anatomy, the main body having a long axis and including a first guide portion defining a first guide slot that extends along a first guide axis and a second guide portion defining a second guide slot that extends along a second guide axis, the main body further having a first track portion formed along a first track axis that is parallel to and offset from the first guide axis and a second track portion formed along a second track axis that is parallel to and offset from the second guide axis;

a first sliding guide section having a first cut slot and a first rail, the first cut slot extending along a first cut slot axis that is parallel to the first guide axis, the first rail operable to slidably translate along the first track portion such that the first sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the first track portion; and

a second sliding guide section having a second cut slot and a second rail, the second cut slot extending along a second cut slot axis that is parallel to the second guide axis, the second rail operable to slidably translate along the second track portion such that the second sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the second track portion.

The system of claim 12 wherein the first track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a first positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the first rail such that the first rail is operable to slidably translate along the first track portion until coming into contact with the first positive stop.

The system of claim 13 wherein the second track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a second positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the second rail such that the second rail is operable to slidably translate along the second track portion until coming into contact with the second positive stop.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the first guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the first guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends.

16. The system of claim 12 wherein the second guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the second guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends.

17. The system of claim 12 wherein the first sliding guide section has first, second, third and fourth walls that collectively define the first cut slot.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising a peg that connects one of the first, second, third and fourth walls with the first rail.

19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising:

a fixation member that extends from said first member and is operable to fix said first member relative to the selected portion of the anatomy.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising:

a second fixation member moveable relative to said first member and positionable at an angle relative to said first fixation member.

21. A system for performing a resection of a selected portion of an anatomy with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a main body operable to be fixed to the selected portion of the anatomy, the main body having a long axis and including a first guide portion defining a first guide slot that extends through a first longitudinal guide axis and a second guide portion defining a second guide slot that extends through a second longitudinal guide axis, wherein the first and second guide slots are formed along distinct and intersecting planes, the main body further having a first track portion formed along a first track axis that is parallel to and offset from the first longitudinal guide axis and a second track portion formed along a second track axis that is parallel to and offset from the second longitudinal guide axis;

a first sliding guide section having four walls that collectively define a first cut slot and a first rail connected to one of the four walls by a first stem, the first rail operable to slidably translate along the first track portion such that the first sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct lateral positions along the first track portion, wherein the first cut slot extends along a first cut slot axis that is parallel to the first and second longitudinal guide axes; and

a second sliding guide section having four walls that collectively define a second cut slot and a second rail connected to one of the four walls by a second stem, the second rail operable to slidably translate along the second track portion such that the second sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct lateral positions along the second track portion, wherein the second cut slot extends along a second cut slot axis that is parallel to the first and second longitudinal guide axes.

The system of claim 21 wherein the first track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a first positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the first rail such that the first rail is operable to slidably translate along the first track portion until coming into contact with the first positive stop and wherein the second track portion has an open end and a closed end, the closed end having a second positive stop in the main body that limits slidable translation of the second rail such that the second rail is operable to slidably translate along the second track portion until coming into contact with the second positive stop.

The system of claim 21 wherein the first guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the first guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends and wherein the second guide portion has first and second guide surfaces, wherein the second guide surface is bounded at opposite ends by lateral walls on the main body and wherein the second guide surface is unbounded by the main body at opposite ends.

24. A system for performing a resection of a selected portion of an anatomy with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a main body operable to be fixed to the selected portion of the anatomy, the main body having a first guide surface extending along a first guide axis to guide the resection instrument along the first guide surface, the main body further having a first track portion formed along a first track axis; and

a first sliding guide section having a second guide surface extending along second guide axis and a first guide rail, the second guide axis being parallel to the first track axis, wherein the first guide rail translates along the first track portion such that the first sliding guide section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the first track portion.

25. The system of claim 24 wherein the main body has a third guide surface extending along a third guide axis to guide the resection instrument along the third guide surface.

26. The system of claim 25 wherein the main body further includes a second track portion formed along a second track axis.

27. The system of claim 26 , further comprising a second sliding guide section having a fourth guide surface extending along a fourth guide axis and a second guide rail, the fourth guide axis being parallel to the second track axis, wherein the second guide rail translates along the second track portion such that the second sliding section moves throughout a plurality of distinct positions along the second track portion.
