Abstract

Medical devices and methods for delivery or implantation of prostheses within hollow body organs and vessels or other luminal anatomy are disclosed. The subject technologies may be used in the treatment of atherosclerosis in stenting procedures or be used in variety of other procedures. The systems may employ a self expanding stent restrained by one or more members released by an electrolytically erodable latch. Such release means do not connect directly to the implant, though one or more portions may contact it.

Claims (32)

1. A stent delivery system comprising:

an elongate body;

a stent comprising a near end, a far end and a structure extending therebetween; and

an electrically conductive segment of material passing through at least one of the near end and the far end of the stent and connecting said at least one of the near or far end of the stent to the elongate body, the electrically conductive segment comprising at least one electrolytically erodible section being spaced longitudinally away from and not directly connected to the stent and being in non-overlapping relation with the stent,

wherein erosion of said erodible section allows the electrically conductive segment of material to be pulled through the structure to completely release said stent end from the elongate body without releasing the other stent end,

wherein the stent includes a receptacle and the electrically conductive segment of material is in the form of a loop which passes through the receptacle.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each loop of material is a wire or a ribbon.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each loop is made of a first metal and at least a portion of the remainder of each electrically conductive material is made of a second metal, wherein the first metal is less noble than the second metal.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein each electrolytically erodible section comprises solder.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a slidably actuatable tubular restraint over at least a portion of the stent.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein only one of the near and far ends of the stent is held by said segment of material.

7. The system of claim 1 or 6 , wherein the stent has an untwisted configuration and a twisted reduced diameter configuration after rotation of at least one of the near end or the far end relative to the other.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein a plurality of segments holds the near or far end of the stent to the elongate body.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the stent is in the twisted reduced diameter configuration when the stent is connected to the elongate body.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the structure of the stent comprises a lattice of closed cells.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein each closed cell comprises a plurality of struts including a first pair of axially adjacent and interconnected struts and a second pair of axially adjacent and interconnected struts, one strut of the first pair being connected to the one strut of the second pair through a strut junction.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein each closed cell consists of four interconnected struts.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elongate body is electrically conductive and covered with an insulating layer.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein both ends of the stent are connected to the elongate body by at least one segment each.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least one near end electrically conductive segment passes through the near end of the stent and includes at least one near end erodible section, and at least one far end electrically conductive segment passes through the far end of the stent and includes at least one far end erodible section, wherein the near and far end erodible sections are electrically isolated from each other.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least one near end electrically conductive segment passes through the near end of the stent and includes at least one near end erodible section, and at least one far end electrically conductive segment passes through the far end of the stent and includes a far end erodible section, wherein the near and far end erodible sections are not electrically isolated each other.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the near end erodible section and the far end erodible section are made of different materials.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the erodible sections are made of the same material and have different volumes.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one erodible section is exposed and the remainder of the segment is insulated.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the near end or the far end of the stent comprises at least one crown, said at least one crown being connected to the elongate body and defining at least one aperture adapted to receive the electrically conductive segment of material.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the segment of material is made of wire about 0.001 inch in diameter, and wherein all but the at least one erodible section is covered with an insulating material or a protective metal.

22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the at least one erodible section is about a 0.005 inch long.

23. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrolytically erodible section comprises a first end and a second end, wherein the first and second ends of the at least one electrolytically erodible section are placed between first and second ends of the electrically conductive segment of material.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein the electrically conductive segment of material is covered by a second material that is incomplete between the first end and second end of the at least one electrolytically erodible section.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein portions of the electrically conductive segment of material passing through at least one of the near end and the far end of the stent are completely covered by the second material.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the second material comprises an insulative material.

27. The system of claim 25 , wherein the second material comprises a noble metal.
