Abstract

An actuator assembly for use in a disk drive includes a first read head and a coarse actuator. The coarse actuator includes a coarse actuator body and a first actuator arm extending away from the coarse actuator body. The first actuator arm has a proximal end attached to the coarse actuator body and a distal end. The actuator assembly further includes a first microactuator attached to the distal end of the first actuator arm. The first microactuator supports the first read head. The actuator assembly further includes a first force-balancing microactuator attached to the distal end of the first actuator arm without any read head attached to the first force-balancing microactuator.

Claims (20)

1. An actuator assembly for use in a disk drive, the actuator assembly comprising:

a first read head;

a coarse actuator including:

a coarse actuator body; and

a first actuator arm extending away from the coarse actuator body, the first actuator arm having a proximal end attached to the coarse actuator body and a distal end;

a first microactuator attached to the distal end of the first actuator arm, the first microactuator supporting the first read head; and

a first force-balancing microactuator attached to the distal end of the first actuator arm without any read head attached to the first force-balancing microactuator.

2. The actuator assembly of claim 1 further comprising a first balancing element supported by the first force-balancing microactuator.

3. The actuator assembly of claim 2 further comprising a first head gimbal assembly that includes the first read head, the first head gimbal assembly having a first mass, the first balancing element having a mass between eighty percent and one hundred and twenty percent of the first mass.

4. The actuator assembly of claim 1 further comprising a second actuator arm, a second read head, and a second microactuator distally attached to the second actuator arm, the second microactuator supporting the second read head.

5. The actuator assembly of claim 4 further comprising a third read head, and a third microactuator distally attached to the second actuator arm, the third microactuator supporting the third read head.

The actuator assembly of claim 5 further comprising a third actuator arm, a fourth read head, and a fourth microactuator distally attached to the third actuator arm, the second actuator arm being disposed between the first actuator arm and the third actuator arm, the fourth microactuator supporting the fourth read head.

7. The actuator assembly of claim 6 further comprising a second force-balancing microactuator distally attached to the third actuator arm without any read head attached to the second force-balancing microactuator.

8. The actuator assembly of claim 4 further comprising a second force-balancing microactuator distally attached to the second actuator arm without any read head attached to the second force-balancing microactuator.

9. The actuator assembly of claim 8 further comprising

a first balancing element supported by the first force-balancing microactuator;

a first head gimbal assembly that includes the first read head, the first head gimbal assembly having a first mass, the first balancing element having a mass between eighty percent and one hundred and twenty percent of the first mass;

a second balancing element supported by the second force-balancing microactuator; and

a second head gimbal assembly that includes the second read head, the second head gimbal assembly having a second mass, the second balancing element having a mass between eighty percent and one hundred and twenty percent of the second mass.

10. The actuator assembly of claim 1 wherein the first force-balancing microactuator is configured to actuate in a direction opposite of the first microactuator during operation of the first micro actuator.
