Abstract

The present invention discloses DNA sequences encoding plant and novel lipid acyl hydrolase proteins having coleopteran specific insect inhibitory activity, as well as variants and permuteins having enhanced levels of activity directed to controlling coleopteran insect infestation and enhanced levels of expression in planta. Additionally, catalytic dyad active site conformation is disclosed for both dicot and monocot plant derived non-specific lipid acyl hydrolases having coleopteran insect inhibitory properties.

Claims (5)

1. A method for protecting a plant from Coleopteran insect infestation comprising providing to said plant a Coleopteran insect inhibitory amount of a protein exhibiting lipid acyl hydrolase activity, wherein said protein comprises an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:27.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said Coleopteran insect is a corn rootworm.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein said plant is a monocot plant.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the plant is a transgenic plant transformed with a DNA segment that expresses the insect inhibitory amount of said protein in the cells of said plant.

5. A seed produced from the transgenic plant according to the method of claim 4 , wherein said seed comprises said DNA segment.
