Abstract

A bed including a frame, a deck, a siderail, a communication network and a graphic caregiver interface module. The graphic caregiver interface module includes an input device, a control circuit, a memory, and a display.

Claims (29)

1. A bed comprising:

a frame;

a deck coupled to the frame;

a communication network, located on the bed, the communication network having a plurality of module connection points;

a control module, coupled to a first module connection point of the network, the module including a user accessible input device to accept a user input, a control circuit coupled to the network and to the input device, the control circuit including a transceiver to receive a signal from the network and to transmit a control signal responsive to the user input over the network.

2. The bed of claim 1 , wherein the control module comprises a graphic caregiver interface module including a memory coupled to the control circuit, the memory to store predetermined graphic format data, and a display coupled to the control circuit.

3. The bed of claim 2 , wherein the display comprises a liquid crystal display.

4. The bed of claim 2 , further comprising a siderail coupled to one of the frame and the deck, the display of the graphic caregiver interface module being supported by the siderail.

5. The bed of claim 4 , wherein the display is pivotably coupled to the siderail.

6. The bed of claim 5 , wherein the display is movable between a first substantially vertical position and a second substantially horizontal position.

7. The bed of claim 5 , wherein the display is pivotably coupled to the siderail about a pivot axis adjacent to a top end of the display screen.

8. The bed of claim 4 , wherein the siderail includes a side wall having a Surface and a recess formed in the surface, and the display is coupled to the siderail and movable between a first position in which the display is positioned to lie in the recess and a second position in which at least a majority of the display is positioned to lie outside the recess.

9. The bed of claim 2 , further comprising a second control module coupled to a second module connection point of the communication network and configured to perform a dedicated function on the bed.

10. The bed of claim 9 , wherein the control circuit is configured to receive commands from the first mentioned control module to retrieve stored graphic format data from the memory and to output the graphic format data on the display to provide a menu-driven control for the control module using the input device.

11. The bed of claim 10 , wherein the second control module comprises a bed articulation control module configured to move the deck in response to a control signal from the control circuit.

12. A bed comprising:

a frame;

a deck coupled to the frame;

a communication network located on the bed, the communication network having a plurality of module connection points;

a first control module, coupled to a first module connection point of the plurality of module connection points, the module including a first input device, a first control circuit coupled to the network and to the first input device, the first control circuit including a first transceiver to receive signals from the network and to output signals to the network; and

a second control module, coupled to a second module connection point of the plurality of module connection points, the second control module including the second input device, a second control circuit coupled to the network and to the second input device, the second control circuit including a second transceiver to receive signals from the network and to output signals to the network.

13. The bed of claim 12 , wherein the first module connection point comprises a first connector, to detachably couple the first control module to the network.

14. The bed of claim 13 , wherein the second module connection point comprises a second connector, to detachably couple the second control module to the network.

15. The bed of claim 14 , wherein the first connector and the second connector comprise a connector adapted to couple to either one of the first and the second control modules.

16. The bed of claim 15 , wherein the first control module comprises a graphic caregiver interface module including a memory coupled to the first control circuit, the memory to store predetermined graphic format data, and a display coupled to the first control circuit.

17. The bed of claim 16 , further comprising a siderail coupled to one of the frame and the deck, the display of the graphic caregiver interface module being supported by the siderail.

18. The bed of claim 17 , wherein the display is pivotably coupled to the siderail.

19. The bed of claim 1 , wherein the module connection points are adapted to enable the first control module to send signals to and receive signals from the second control module.

20. The bed of claim 19 , wherein the communication network comprises a twisted pair network.
