Abstract

Various embodiments of a toilet fill valve lock and method for adjusting the fill water level in a toilet are provided. In one embodiment a toilet fill valve includes a riser that extends along an axis and an inner shaft that is disposed along the axis between the axis and the riser. The toilet fill valve further includes a lock that is moveable toward and away from the axis and which can limit the movement of the riser relative to the inner shaft about the axis when in a locked position.

Claims (51)

1. A toilet fill valve comprising:

a riser that extends along an axis;

an inner shaft that is disposed along the axis between the axis and the riser;

a lock that is movable toward the axis and away from the axis, and which can limit the movement about the axis of the riser relative to the inner shaft when in a locked position;

the lock has a body that comprises a contact surface that contacts a stop when the lock is in the locked position, the stop extending outward from the inner shaft;

the body comprises a release lever that is oriented at an angle beta relative to a tangential surface of the body, the angle beta ranging up to about 90 degrees; and

wherein a flange of the riser contacts the stop when the lock is in the locked position.

2. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock comprises a hinge.

3. The toilet fill valve of claim 2 , wherein the hinge is a living hinge comprising polymer.

4. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock contacts the inner shaft when in the locked position.

5. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock is in physical communication with the riser in both the locked position and the unlocked position.

6. The toilet fill valve of claim of 5 , wherein the lock is connected to the riser via a hinge.

7. The toilet fill valve of claim 6 , wherein the hinge is a living hinge.

8. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock is integral with the riser.

9. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock butts against the stop when in the locked position.

10. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock overlaps the stop when in the locked position.

11. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the contact surface is oriented at an angle alpha relative to the stop, the angle alpha ranging up to about 90 degrees.

12. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the release lever away from the stop causes the contact surface of the lock to disengage from the stop.

13. The toilet fill valve of claim 1 , wherein the lock comprises a hinge that is a v-shaped.

14. A toilet fill valve comprising:

a riser that extends along an axis;

an inner shaft that is disposed along the axis between the axis and the riser;

a lock that is movable toward the axis and away from the axis, and which can limit the movement about the axis of the riser relative to the inner shaft when in a locked position;

the lock has a body that comprises a contact surface that contacts a stop when the lock is in the locked position, the stop extending outward from the inner shaft;

the body comprises a release lever that is oriented at an angle beta relative to a tangential surface of the body, the angle beta ranging up to about 90 degrees;

the stop of the inner shaft comprises a plurality of protrusions extending therefrom and forming a groove between the plurality of protrusions;

the riser comprises a flange that extends inward toward the axis; and

wherein the flange of the riser is positioned in the groove when the lock is in the locked position.

The toilet fill valve of claim 14 , wherein contact between the lock and the stop restricts movement of the flange, when the lock is in the locked position, to prevent the flange from moving substantially outside the groove to avoid telescoping movement of the riser relative to the inner shaft.

16. A toilet fill valve comprising:

a riser that extends along an axis;

an inner shaft that is disposed along the axis between the axis and the riser; and

a lock that is movable toward the axis and away from the axis, and which can limit the movement about the axis of the riser relative to the inner shaft when in a locked position;

the lock has a body that comprises a contact surface that contacts a stop when the lock is in the locked position;

the body comprises a release lever that is oriented at an angle beta relative to a tangential surface of the body, the angle beta ranging up to about 90 degrees; and

wherein movement of the release lever toward the tangential surface of the body causes the contact surface of the lock to release the stop.

17. A toilet fill valve comprising:

a riser that extends along an axis;

an inner shaft that is disposed along the axis between the axis and the riser; and

a lock that is movable toward the axis and away from the axis, and which can limit the movement about the axis of the riser relative to the inner shaft when in a locked position;

the lock has a body that comprises a contact surface that contacts a stop when the lock is in the locked position;

the body comprises a release lever that is oriented at an angle beta relative to a tangential surface of the body, the angle beta ranging up to about 90 degrees; and

wherein movement of the release lever in a direction toward the stop causes the contact surface of the lock to disengage from the stop.

18. A method for adjusting the fill water level in a toilet, the method comprising the steps of:

adjusting the height of a riser to a predefined position along an axis relative to an inner shaft disposed along the axis and between the axis and the riser;

rotating the riser in a first direction relative to the inner shaft and placing a flange of the riser in contact with a first surface of a stop of the inner shaft;

moving a lock having a body with a contact surface in the locked position in which the contact surface contacts a stop to obstruct the riser from moving a circumferential distance that is greater than the length of the groove, where the body further comprises a release lever; and

manipulating the release lever that is oriented at an angle beta relative to a tangential surface of the body, where the angle beta ranges up to about 90 degrees.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising the steps of:

releasing the lock from the stop; and

rotating the riser in a second direction relative to the inner shaft to allow movement of the riser along the axis.
