Abstract

In one embodiment of the present invention a mobile bearing knee prosthesis may include an interface (e.g., a spherical radius interface) comprised of a concave superior surface on a tibial tray and a convex inferior surface on a tibial insert. In another embodiment of the present invention a mobile bearing knee prosthesis may include an interface (e.g., a spherical radius interface) comprised of a convex superior surface on a tibial tray and a concave inferior surface on a tibial insert. In another embodiment of the present invention a mobile bearing knee prosthesis may include a biconcave interface (e.g., having a “wave” like surface geometry). This “wave” like surface geometry may be at the interface between a tibial insert and a tibial tray in the mobile bearing knee (as opposed to the interface between the tibial insert and a femoral component).

Claims (30)

1. A mobile bearing knee prosthesis, comprising:

a tibial tray for interfacing with a tibia of a patient, wherein the tibial tray comprises an upper surface; and

a tibial insert disposed adjacent the tibial tray, wherein the tibial insert comprises a lower surface;

wherein substantially the entire upper surface of the tibial tray is defined by an arbitrary shape, wherein the arbitrary shape is fully rotated around an axis of rotation, the arbitrary shape being non-planar along the upper surface of the tibial tray;

wherein the lower surface of the tibial insert is configured to be substantially complementary to the upper surface of the tibial tray when the tibial insert and the tibial tray are aligned in both: (a) a medial-lateral axis of the tibial tray and the tibial insert; and (b) an anterior-posterior axis of the tibial tray and the tibial insert;

wherein the tibial insert is capable of movement relative to the tibial tray and the movement of the tibial insert relative to the tibial tray includes at least pivotal movement around the axis of rotation;

wherein the axis of rotation is the only axis around which the tibial insert is capable of pivoting relative to the tibial tray; and

wherein the pivotal movement of the tibial insert relative to the tibial tray is guided by a cooperating interface between the tibial tray and the tibial insert around the axis of rotation such that: (a) the tibial insert utilizes no male member, distinct from the cooperating interface, extending into the tibial tray through the upper surface of the tibial tray to guide the pivotal movement; and (b) the tibial tray utilizes no post or peg to guide the pivotal movement.

2. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which is convex along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

3. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which is concave along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

4. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which includes a plurality of convex portions along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

5. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which includes a plurality of concave portions along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

6. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which has a stepped configuration along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

7. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which has a sawtooth configuration along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

8. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which is spherical along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

9. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the arbitrary shape comprises a surface which is elliptical along the upper surface of the tibial tray.

10. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of the tibial insert is configured to receive a femoral component which interfaces with a femur of the patient.

11. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface of the tibial tray comprises metal and the lower surface of the tibial insert comprises polyethelene.

12. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the tibial tray is formed of metal and the tibial insert is formed of polyethelene.

13. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a substantially central location along the medial-lateral axis of the tibial tray.

14. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a substantially central location along the medial-lateral axis of the tibial insert.

15. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a substantially central location along the anterior-posterior axis of the tibial tray.

16. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a substantially central location along the anterior-posterior axis of the tibial insert.

17. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a non-central location along the medial-lateral axis of the tibial tray.

18. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a non-central location along the medial-lateral axis of the tibial insert.

19. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a non-central location along the anterior-posterior axis of the tibial tray.

20. The mobile bearing knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is disposed at a non-central location along the anterior-posterior axis of the tibial insert.
