Abstract

Devices and methods are provided for temporarily maintaining access to a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body. One embodiment of the catheter device includes an elongated shaft having a proximal shaft section which is flexible enough to be folded or coiled into a configuration for deployment within the patient. An alternate embodiment includes a catheter device having one or more detachable proximal shaft sections and having at least one one-way valve to restrict fluid flow of inflation fluid to flow to the balloon. After deployment of the catheter device completely within the patient, the opening through which the catheter device is deployed is closed, e.g. by sutures, adhesives and the like to minimize infection at the site. Within a few days or weeks after the tissue has been evaluated for cancer, the temporary catheter device may be removed from the patient. If cancer or pre-cancer cells are found in the specimen removed from the cavity, then a radiation balloon catheter or other irradiation device can be inserted into the patient to irradiate tissue surrounding the biopsy cavity to ensure that cancer cells within the tissue surrounding the cavity are killed.

Claims (21)

1. A method for maintaining access to a breast biopsy cavity at an intracorporeal location in a patient's breast tissue following removal of a cancerous lesion, comprising:

a. providing a catheter having an elongate shaft, a proximal shaft section, a distal shaft section, and a cavity filling member on the distal shaft section configured to at least partially fill the breast biopsy cavity;

b. inserting the catheter through an opening in the patient's breast skin and advancing the catheter through a biopsy channel within the breast tissue until the cavity filling member on the distal shaft section of the catheter is disposed in the breast biopsy cavity;

c. detaching the proximal shaft section from the distal shaft section with the distal shaft section remaining under the breast skin; and

d. closing the opening in the patient's breast skin so as to prevent pathogen access therethrough, while the distal shaft section maintains subcutaneous access to the breast biopsy cavity via the biopsy channel.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the biopsy channel is a passageway formed from the opening in the patient's breast skin to the breast biopsy cavity during a biopsy procedure.

3. A catheter for temporarily at least partially filling a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body, comprising:

a. a shaft having a distal end, a proximal end, a proximal shaft section, a distal shaft section, and an inflatable cavity filling member on the distal shaft section that is configured to at least partially fill the body cavity when inflated with an inflation fluid, and an inflation lumen extending within the shaft and in fluid communication with an interior of the inflatable cavity filling member through at least one discharge port, the proximal shaft section being configured to be attached to the distal shaft section to facilitate inflation of the inflatable cavity filling member with the inflation fluid;

b. the proximal shaft section being configured to be detached from the distal shaft section after the cavity filling member is disposed within the body cavity and inflated with inflation fluid;

c. at least one one-way valve within the distal shaft section to prevent loss of the inflation fluid when the at least one proximal shaft section is detached from the catheter; and

d. at least one vacuum lumen that extends along the catheter shaft to a vacuum port located adjacent to the inflatable cavity filling member, and the vacuum port being configured to facilitate vacuum access to the body cavity, wherein a one-way valve is deployed within the vacuum lumen configured to minimize or prevent loss of vacuum within the body cavity through the vacuum lumen.

4. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the one-way valve is a reed valve or a duck-billed valve.

5. The catheter of claim 3 wherein the vacuum lumen is disposed in part within a detachable proximal shaft section.

6. The catheter of claim 5 wherein the one-way valve within the vacuum lumen is disposed within the distal shaft section.

7. A catheter for temporarily at least partially filling a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body from which tissue has been removed, comprising:

a. a shaft having a distal end, a proximal end, a distal shaft section proximal to the distal end, an inflatable cavity filling member on the distal shaft section that at least partially fills the body cavity in an inflated configuration, a proximal shaft section, a vacuum port proximal or distal to the cavity filling member, a vacuum lumen extending through at least the proximal shaft section and leading to the vacuum port, a discharge port within the interior of the cavity filling member and an inflation lumen extending through the shaft to the discharge port;

b. the vacuum lumen and the inflation lumen in the proximal shaft section configured to be connected to a vacuum source and an inflation fluid source respectively; and

c. a one-way valve deployed within the vacuum lumen configured to minimize or prevent loss of vacuum within the body cavity through the vacuum lumen.

8. The catheter of claim 7 wherein the one-way valve is a reed valve or a duck-billed valve.

9. The catheter of claim 7 wherein the shaft has a detachable proximal shaft section.

10. The catheter of claim 7 wherein the one-way valve within the vacuum lumen is disposed within the distal shaft section.
