Abstract

A method and system for dynamically managing content provided to a mobile device. In one embodiment, the present invention begins by retrieving information from a network. In one embodiment the information is web-based content, and the network is the Internet. The present method and system then dynamically assesses the information which was retrieved from the network. In particular, in one embodiment, the present invention assesses the information by determining the application to which the information corresponds. Next, the present embodiment selectively filters the information such that desired information is compiled. After the selective filtering process, the present embodiment forwards the desired information to the mobile device. In so doing, the present embodiment provides an approach which dynamically manages the content of information so as to efficiently, responsively, and inexpensively provide a mobile device user with desired information.

Claims (53)

1. A method for dynamically managing content provided to a mobile device, said method comprising:

retrieving information from a network during a transaction;

dynamically assessing said information to determine a type of said transaction;

selectively filtering said information such that desired information for said type of said transaction is compiled; and

forwarding said desired information to said mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said information has not previously been tailored for interaction with said mobile device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said dynamically assessing said information comprises:

determining the application to which said information corresponds.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said dynamically assessing said information comprises:

determining if said information contains an application specific-tag.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said selectively filtering said information comprises selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by retaining only essential portions of said information which contains said application-specific tag.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said selectively filtering comprises:

selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by subjecting said information to a text filter, an image filter, and an image transcoder.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein said forwarding said desired information further comprises:

prior to said forwarding said desired information to said mobile device, reformatting said desired information based upon characteristics of said mobile device.

8. A computer system comprising:

a processor;

an address/data bus coupled to said processor;

a computer readable memory coupled to communicate with said processor, said processor for performing computer implemented instructions for a method of dynamically managing content provided to a mobile device, wherein said method of dynamically managing content comprises:

retrieving information from a network during a transaction;

dynamically assessing said information to determine a type of said transaction;

selectively filtering said information such that desired information for said type of said transaction is compiled; and

forwarding said desired information to said mobile device.

9. The computer system of claim 8 , wherein said information has not previously been tailored for interaction with said mobile device.

10. The computer system of claim 8 , wherein said computer readable memory further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

determining the application to which said information corresponds.

11. The computer system as recited in claim 8 , wherein said computer readable memory further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

determining if said information contains an application specific-tag.

12. The computer system as recited in claim 11 , wherein said computer readable memory further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by retaining only essential portions of said information which contains said application-specific tag.

13. The computer system as recited in claim 8 , wherein said computer readable memory further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for selectively filtering said information, said additional instructions comprising:

selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by subjecting said information to a text filter, an image filter, and an image transcoder.

14. The computer system as recited in claim 8 , wherein said computer readable memory further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for selectively filtering said information, said additional instructions comprising:

prior to said forwarding said desired information to said mobile device, reformatting said desired information based upon characteristics of said mobile device.

15. A computer-usable medium comprising computer readable instructions embodied therein that when executed causes a computer to perform a method of dynamic content management, wherein said method of dynamic content management comprises:

retrieving information from a network during a transaction;

dynamically assessing said information to determine a type of said transaction;

selectively filtering said information such that desired information for said type of said transaction is compiled; and

forwarding said desired information to a mobile device.

16. The computer-usable medium of claim 15 , wherein said information has not previously been tailored for interaction with said mobile device.

17. The computer-usable medium of claim 15 , wherein said computer readable instructions further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

determining the application to which said information corresponds.

18. The computer-usable medium of claim 15 , wherein said computer readable instructions further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

determining if said information contains an application specific-tag.

19. The computer-usable medium of claim 18 , wherein said computer readable instructions further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for dynamically assessing said information, said additional instructions comprising:

selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by retaining only essential portions of said information which contains said application-specific tag.

20. The computer-usable medium of claim 15 , wherein said computer readable instructions further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for selectively filtering said information, said additional instructions comprising:

selectively filtering said information such that said desired information is compiled by subjecting said information to a text filter, an image filter, and an image transcoder.

21. The computer-usable medium of claim 15 , wherein said computer readable instructions further comprises additional instructions that when executed implement said instruction for forwarding said desired information, said additional instructions comprising:

reformatting said desired information based upon characteristics of said mobile device prior to said forwarding said desired information to said mobile device.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein a uniform resource locator of said information is pre-assigned to said type of said transaction.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein said type of said transaction for said information is determined by examining said uniform resource locator (URL) of said information.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mobile device displays said desired information in brief portions until a full display of said desired information is requested.
