Abstract

A forced air warming unit has a casing with inlet and outlet openings. The casing encloses a scroll housing with a curved inside surface in which a blower is disposed. A circuit board in the casing encloses the blower in the scroll housing. At least one opening penetrates the circuit board. A heater plate is disposed between the circuit board and the blower. The blower draws air through the inlet opening, along a first side of the circuit board through the at least one opening into the scroll housing. The blower also forces air along a second side of the circuit board which faces the scroll housing, through air passages in the circuit board, along the first side through the at least one opening, into the scroll housing. The blower accelerates air along the curved inside surface and past the heater plate. Heated, pressurized air exits through the outlet opening.

Claims (38)

1. A system to provide pressurized, thermally-treated air to a convective warming device by way of an air hose, comprising:

a forced air warming unit for providing a stream of pressurized, warmed air to an air hose;

a heater in the forced air warming unit;

a control circuit in the forced air warming unit, the control circuit connected to the heater; and

a manually-operated remote control unit external to the forced air warming unit, the remote control unit coupled to the control circuit for causing the forced air warming unit to provide pressurized air in a temperature range of about 27° C. to about 41° C.; and

further including: a clinical garment with a convective warming device mounted therein; and an air hose connecting the warming device with the forced air warming unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote control unit includes a first control for controlling the temperature of the pressurized air, further including a signal cable mounted to the air hose and connecting the first control to the control circuit.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the remote control unit includes a second control and the signal cable also connects the second control to the control unit for regulating high voltage functions of the forced air warming unit.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the first control includes a hand-operated potentiometer.

5. A method for warming a person using a forced air warming unit, comprising:

clothing the person in a clinical garment with a convective warming device mounted therein;

connecting an air hose between the convective device and the forced air warming unit; and

controlling the forced air warming unit with a manually-operated remote control unit to provide pressurized air to the convective warming device in a temperature range of about 27° C. to about 41° C.

6. The method of claim 5 , further including providing the warmed pressurized air to the convective warming device at a pressure in the range of between 0.3 inches H 2 0 and 1.0 inches H 2 0.

7. The method of claim 5 , further including providing warmed pressurized air to the convective warming device at a flow rate of between 6 cubic feet per minute and 15 cubic feet per minute.

8. A method for warming a person using a forced air warming unit, comprising:

clothing the person in a clinical garment with a convective warming device mounted therein;

connecting an air hose between the convective device and the forced air warming unit;

controlling the temperature of pressurized air produced by the forced air warming unit with a manually-operated remote control unit; and

providing warmed pressurized air to the convective warming device at a pressure in the range of between 0.3 inches H 2 0 and 1.0 inches H 2 0.

9. The method of claim 8 , further including providing warmed pressurized air to the convective warming device at a flow rate of between 6 cubic feet per minute and 15 cubic feet per minute.

10. A method for warming a person using a forced air warming unit, comprising:

clothing the person in a clinical garment with a convective warming device mounted therein;

connecting an air hose between the convective device and the forced air warming unit;

controlling the temperature of pressurized air produced by the forced air warming unit with a manually-operated remote control unit; and

providing warmed pressurized air to the convective warming device at a flow rate of between 6 cubic feet per minute and 15 cubic feet per minute.

11. A comfort warming system, comprising:

a forced air warming unit to provide pressurized air;

a heater in the forced air warming unit;

a control circuit in the forced air warming unit, connected to the heater;

a clinical garment with a convective warming device mounted therein;

an air hose connecting the warming device with the forced air warming unit;

a manually-operated remote control unit external to the forced air warming unit, the remote control unit including a first control for causing the control circuit to control the temperature of the pressurized air emitted in the clinical garment by the convective warming device within a thermal comfort temperature range; and

a signal cable mounted to the air hose and connecting the first control to the control circuit.

12. The comfort warming system of claim 11 , wherein the remote control unit includes a second control and the signal cable also connects the second control to the control unit for regulating high voltage functions of the forced air warming unit.

13. The comfort warming system of claim 12 , wherein the first control includes a hand-operated potentiometer.

14. The comfort warming system of claim 12 , wherein the second control includes an on-off switch.

15. The comfort warming system of claim 11 , wherein the thermal comfort temperature range is from about 27° C. to about 41° C.
