Abstract

A system and method is provided for improved monitoring and controlling of mechanically commutated DC motors. The system and method include DC motors, pulse-count driver circuitry for driving the motors, motor position sensing circuitry, and motor control circuitry. The system and method provide for improved motor current waveform sensing that is able to effectively reject false brake pulses, avoid erroneous processing due to fluctuating battery voltage levels, and reduce the sensitivity to variations in motor current signals due to dynamic motor load, manufacturing variation, system aging, temperature, brush bounce, EMI, and other factors. The system and method also include an improved ability to multiplex additional external motor drivers to the motor control circuitry, select between sequential and simultaneous drive modes using an SPI bit, and monitor the system controller for an error condition and drive the connected motors in response to the error condition.

Claims (24)

1. A method for controlling sensitivity of a motor position detection system to changes in battery voltage, comprising the steps of:

providing motor position detection circuitry coupled to a motor and including pulse-generating circuitry configured to generate pulses responsive to an oscillator input;

providing oscillator circuitry coupled to the pulse-generating circuitry;

applying a voltage to the oscillator circuitry, causing the oscillator to oscillate at a frequency that is a function of the applied voltage; and

causing at least one of frequency and duration of the pulses generated by the pulse-generating circuitry to vary as a function of the voltage.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the frequency and duration of the pulses varies linearly as a function of the applied voltage.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the step of applying a voltage comprises applying the voltage from a battery through a resistor.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the motor position detection circuitry uses a current associated with the motor to determine the motor position.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein both the frequency and duration of the pulses generated by the pulse generating circuitry are caused to vary as a function of the voltage.

6. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the method is employed on a vehicle.

7. The method as defined in claim 6 , wherein the method is employed in a heating, ventilating or air conditioning system on the vehicle.

8. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the motor position detection system detects the position of at least one DC motor.

9. The method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the at least one DC motor is a brush-type DC motor.

10. A system for controlling sensitivity of motor position detection to changes in battery voltage, comprising:

motor position detection circuitry including pulse-generating circuitry configured to generate signals in response to a signal received from oscillator circuitry;

oscillator circuitry coupled to said pulse-generating circuitry;

a battery coupled to said oscillator, wherein said battery has a voltage determining the frequency of the oscillator such that at least one of the frequency and duration of signals generated by the pulse-generating circuitry varies as a function of the voltage of said battery.

11. The system as defined in claim 10 , wherein said at least one of the frequency and duration of signals generated by the pulse-generating circuitry varies linearly as a function of the battery voltage.

12. The system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the battery is coupled to the oscillator by a resistor.

13. The system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the motor position detection circuitry uses a current associated with the motor to determine motor position.

14. The system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the system is employed on a vehicle.

15. The system as defined in claim 14 , wherein the system is employed on a heating, ventilating or air conditioning system on the vehicle.

16. The system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the motor position detection circuitry detects the position of at least one DC motor.

17. The system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the at least one DC motor is a brush-type DC motor.
