Abstract

A projectile retrieval system includes one or more valves disposed to selectively release projectiles from a bullet stop and containment system. The valves are in pneumatic communication with a tube which utilized a negative air pressure generated by a vacuum to move the projectiles from the valves to a central container. The projectile retrieval system may also include a vacuum extension which enables the same system to retrieve bullets and casings, fragments and other debris on the range.

Claims (32)

1. A bullet retrieval system comprising:

at least one bullet deceleration area for decelerating bullets;

a pneumatic transport mechanism disposed in communication with the bullet deceleration area, the transport mechanism comprising an elongate tube having a portion disposed adjacent the at least one bullet deceleration area and a portion disposed remote from the bullet deceleration area, the tube being configured for carrying bullets received from the deceleration area to a location away from the deceleration area; and

at least one valve disposed between the bullet deceleration area and the elongate tube, the at least one valve having a first position wherein the at least one valve prevents bullets from passing from the bullet deceleration area to the transport mechanism and a second position wherein the at least one valve allows bullets to pass from the bullet deceleration area to the transport mechanism, and a control mechanism for selectively moving the at least one valve between the first position and the second position to thereby selectively prevent bullets from passing from the bullet deceleration area into the transport mechanism.

2. The bullet retrieval system of claim 1 , further comprising a container disposed in communication with the elongate tube of the transport mechanism for receiving bullets from the transport mechanism.

3. The bullet retrieval system of claim 1 , further comprising a valve actuator.

4. The bullet retrieval system of claim 3 , wherein the valve actuator is disposed in communication with a remote control input for selectively causing the valve actuator to move the valve between the first, closed position, and the second, open position.

5. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the remote control input comprises a radio signal generator.

6. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the remote control input is connected to the valve actuator by a control line.

7. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the remote control input comprises a processor.

8. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the remote control input comprises at least one lever.

9. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the remote control input comprises at least one button.

10. The bullet retrieval system of claim 4 , wherein the valve actuator is disposed in communication with a sensor configured for sensing bullets disposed adjacent the valve.

11. The bullet retrieval system of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum, and wherein the transport mechanism further comprises a transport tube connecting the vacuum and the at least one valve.

12. The bullet retrieval system of claim 11 , wherein the retrieval system further includes a remote control input for selectively controlling the vacuum.

13. The bullet retrieval system of claim 1 , further comprising means for filtering air which passes through the transport tube.

14. A bullet retrieval system comprising:

at least one bullet deceleration area for decelerating bullets;

a collection container;

a pneumatic transport mechanism comprising at least one elongate tube attached to the at least one bullet deceleration area, and disposed to carry bullets from the at least one bullet deceleration area to the collection container;

a vacuum attached to the transport mechanism and configured to generate negative pressure within the elongate tube; and

an elongate extension tube attached to the at least one elongate tube of the transport mechanism, the extension tube having a first end which is attached to the at least one elongate tube and a second, free end, at least a portion of the elongate extension tube being flexible so that the second end is movable away from the at least one elongate tube and the at least one bullet deceleration area while the elongate tube remains attached to the at least one bullet deceleration area, without preventing flow between the at least one deceleration area and the collection container, the transport mechanism supplying suction through the extension tube.

15. The bullet retrieval system of claim 14 , further comprising a vacuum head disposed in pneumatic communication with the extension tube.

16. A bullet retrieval system comprising:

at least one bullet containment area for containing bullets, the bullet containment area comprising at least one bullet containment chamber having a plurality of impact plates for decelerating bullets;

at least one control member disposed in pneumatic communication with the at least one bullet containment chamber, the control member comprising a valve having a first, closed position wherein the valve maintains bullets adjacent the bullet containment area and a second, open position wherein the control member enables bullets to move away from the bullet containment area, and a control mechanism for selectively moving the valve between the first, closed position and a second, open position; and

a transport mechanism disposed in communication with the at least one control member, the transport mechanism being configured for carrying bullets received from the at least one control member, the transport mechanism comprising a mechanism for generating airflow to move bullets through the transport mechanism.

17. The bullet retrieval system of claim 16 , further comprising a container disposed in communication with the transport mechanism for receiving bullets from the transport mechanism.

18. The bullet retrieval system of claim 16 , further comprising means for actuating the valve from a remote location.

19. The bullet retrieval system of claim 16 , further comprising a sensor for actuating the valve in response to bullet load adjacent the valve.

20. The bullet load retrieval system of claim 16 , wherein the transport mechanism comprises a vacuum and a transport tube for connecting the airflow to the control member.

21. The bullet load retrieval system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one control member comprises a plurality of valves and wherein the transport means comprises a transport tube disposed in communication with each valve for carrying bullets released through the valves to a central collection area.
