Abstract

A disposable tissue removal device comprises a “tube within a tube” cutting element mounted to a handpiece. The inner cannula of the cuffing element defines an inner lumen and terminates in an inwardly beveled, razor-sharp cutting edge. The inner cannula is driven by both a rotary motor and a reciprocating motor. At the end of its stroke, the inner cannula makes contact with the cutting board to completely sever the tissue. An aspiration vacuum is applied to the inner lumen to aspirate excised tissue through the inner cannula and into a collection trap that is removably mounted to the handpiece. The rotary and reciprocating motors are hydraulically powered through a foot pedal operated hydraulic circuit. The entire biopsy device is configured to be disposable. In one embodiment, the cutting element includes a cannula hub that can be connected to a fluid source, such as a valve-controlled saline bag.

Claims (29)

1. A medical device for attaching to a handpiece defined by a distal end and having an inner cutting element including an inner cannula that has an open distal end, said medical device comprising:

an outer cannula having a proximal end and a distal end, said outer cannula being sized to accept the inner cutting element including the inner cannula; and

a cannula hub having a bore therethrough, said cannula hub being fixedly attached to said proximal end of said outer cannula and supporting said outer cannula, wherein said cannula hub further comprises a cooperating fitting member that is configured for selective positive engagement with a mating fitting disposed on the distal end of the handpiece so as to selectively and removably secure said cannula hub to said handpiece, the cooperating fitting member including a flange having a plurality of wings separated by a plurality of recessed regions, at least one of the wings having a larger circumferential length than at least one of the remaining wings;

wherein an instrument is selectively insertable through said bore and into said outer cannula.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein a marker, a therapeutic agent, a fluid, or a drug is provided through said bore when the handpiece is removed from said cannula hub.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein said cannula hub is configured to facilitate delivery of a marker.

4. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the distal end of the outer cannula is closed.

5. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising an irrigation fitting on the cannula hub, the irrigation fitting comprising an irrigation lumen in communication with the bore in the cannula hub.

6. The medical device of claim 1 wherein the proximal end of the outer cannula extends partially through the bore in the cannula hub.

7. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said flange of said cooperating fitting member is received within a recess of said mating fitting of said handpiece.

8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein said cooperating fitting member of said cannula hub and said mating fitting of said handpiece are configured as Luer fittings that are selectively engageable by a twisting motion.

9. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein said flange of said cooperating fitting member includes at least one of a protuberance and a retention dimple engageable with a correspondingly configured feature arranged on said mating fitting of said handpiece.

10. A medical device comprising:

a handpiece having an inner cutting instrument including an inner cannula, wherein said handpiece is further defined by a distal end, said distal end having a fitting disposed thereon;

an outer cannula having a proximal end and a distal end, said proximal and distal ends sized for selective insertion of said inner cutting instrument including the inner cannula; and

a cannula hub having a bore therethrough, said cannula hub being fixedly attached to said proximal end of said outer cannula, wherein said cannula hub further comprises a cooperating fitting member that is configured for selective detachable positive engagement with the fitting of said handpiece so as to selectively and removably secure said cannula hub to said handpiece, the cooperating fitting member including a flange having first and second wings separated by a recessed region, the first wing having a larger circumferential length than the second wing;

wherein said bore provides for insertion of a medical instrument through said bore and into said outer cannula when said cannula hub is detached from said handpiece.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein said bore provides for insertion of at least one of a marker, a fluid, a medicine, and a therapeutic agent, to said outer cannula.

12. The device of claim 10 , wherein said cannula hub is configured to facilitate delivery of a marker.

13. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein said fitting includes first and second inwardly extending flanges separated by first and second recessed regions, wherein the first recessed region has a circumferential length greater than the second recessed region.

The medical device of claim 13 , wherein the first wing of said cooperating fitting member is engageable with the first recessed region of said fitting and the second wing of said cooperating fitting member is engageable with the second recessed region of said fitting, the first wing having a circumferential length greater than the second recessed region of said fitting.

15. A tissue cutting device comprising:

a handpiece defined by a distal end, wherein said distal end further comprises a fitting integrally formed thereon, said fitting including first and second inwardly extending flanges separated by first and second recessed regions, wherein the first recessed region has a circumferential length greater than the second recessed region;

a cannula hub comprising a cooperating fitting member that engages with said fitting of said handpiece, said cooperating fitting member including a flange having first and second wings separated by a circumferential recess, wherein a circumferential length of the first wing is greater than a circumferential length of the second wing, the first wing engageable with the first recessed region of said fitting and the second wing engageable with the second recessed region of said fitting, the first wing having a circumferential length greater than the second recessed region of said fitting, said cannula hub mounted to said handpiece by the engagement of said fitting member and said fitting such that said cannula hub is selectively positively engageable to and removable from said handpiece, said cannula hub having a bore therethrough;

an outer cannula supported at a proximal end thereof by said cannula hub and defining a tissue receiving opening adjacent a distal end thereof, and a lumen extending between said proximal and distal ends; and

an inner cutting member attached to said handpiece and slidably disposed within said lumen of said outer cannula, said inner cutting member including an inner cannula with an open distal end and defining a cutting edge at said distal end operable to sever tissue projecting through said tissue receiving opening;

wherein said cannula hub is configured to facilitate delivery of a marker.

16. The device of claim 15 , further comprising a medical instrument selectively insertable through said bore.

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein said bore provides an opening for the selective application of at least one of a site marker, a fluid, a drug, and a therapeutic agent, said selective application occurring when said cannula hub is detached from said handpiece.
