Abstract

The present invention provides a catheter for the delivery of fluid medication across an anatomical region. In accordance with one embodiment, the catheter comprises an elongated tube with a plurality of exit holes along an infusion section of the catheter, and an elongated flexible porous member residing within the tube and forming an annular space between the tube and the member. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes a tube having a plurality of exit holes in a side wall of the tube. The exit holes may combine to form a flow-restricting orifice of the catheter. In one particular embodiment, the catheter comprises a tube having elongated exit slots therein. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes an elongated tubular member made of a porous membrane. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes an elongated “weeping” tubular coil spring attached to an end of, or enclosed within, a tube.

Claims (12)

1. A catheter for the uniform delivery of fluid, comprising:

an elongated tube having a substantially consistent cross-sectional size between a proximal end and a distal end, said distal end being closed, and a plurality of exit holes in a side wall of said tube, said exit holes provided along a length of said tube defining an infusion section of said catheter;

an elongated porous member positioned within said tube and extending along said infusion section, said member being sized so that an annular space is formed between said tube and said member, said member being formed of a porous material that becomes saturated with a fluid introduced within said tube; and

a ring-shaped adhesive bond near the proximal end of said infusion section securing said member to said tube and that is aligned with at least one of said plurality of exit holes, wherein said ring-shaped adhesive bond includes a portion extending into and closing said at least one of said plurality of exit holes, and wherein said ring-shaped adhesive bond substantially fills said annular space such that a fluid introduced into a proximal end of said tube will flow through said member prior to being dispensed from said catheter by flowing through said exit holes.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of said plurality of exit holes is a proximal-most of said plurality of said exit holes.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said member is formed to have a solid cross-section of said porous material.

4. The catheter of claim 1 , additionally comprising a distal adhesive bond securing a distal end of said member to said distal end of said tube.

5. The catheter of claim 1 , additionally comprising an air filter within said tube and proximal of said infusion section.

6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said member is concentric with said tube.

7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said member is not concentric with said tube.

8. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said porous material has an average pore size within the range of 0.1-50 microns.

9. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said annular space has a radial width that is less than about 0.005 microns.
