Abstract

The present invention involves a method and a system for using electrical stimulation and/or chemical stimulation to treat an affective disorder, such as depression. More particularly, the method comprises surgically implanting an electrical stimulation lead and/or catheter that is in communication with a predetermined site which is coupled to a signal generator and/or infusion pump that release either an electrical signal and/or a pharmaceutical resulting in stimulation of the predetermined site thereby treating the mood and/or anxiety.

Claims (12)

1. A method for treating mood and/or anxiety disorder in a patient using electrical stimulation, wherein the method comprising:

performing functional brain imaging of the patient's brain to identify a target cortical area having an abnormal neuronal signal in the cortex of the patient's brain;

positioning at least one electrode array on at least one hemisphere under the skull and above the dura over the target cortical area such that the at least electrode array is positioned over a neuronal population 34±1 mm from midline, 18±1 mm anterior to the anterior commissure and 24±1 mm superior to the midcommissural line and over Brodmann area 9/46 of a dorsal lateral prefrontal area of each hemisphere; and

applying electrical pulses via the electrode array using a pulse generator to electrically stimulate the at least one hemisphere of the patient's brain thereby treating the mood and/or anxiety disorder.

2. A method of treating neuropsychological disorders, comprising:

positioning an electrode array under the skull and above the dura over Brodmann area 9/46 on at least one hemisphere of a patient's brain such that the electrode array is positioned over a neuronal population 34±1 mm from midline, 18±1 mm anterior to the anterior commissure and 24±1 mm superior to the midcommissural line; and

applying electrical pulses via the electrode array to the Brodmann area 9/46 on the at least one hemisphere, whereby the electrical pulses modulate neuronal activity associated with the neuropsychological disorder.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

applying electrical pulses to a second stimulation site including at least one site selected from the list consisting of Brodmann areas 6, 10, 11, 32, 40 and 47.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the neuropsychological disorder comprises a mood disorder.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the neuropsychological disorder comprises an anxiety disorder.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the neuropsychological disorder comprises depression.
