Abstract

An electro-optic integrated circuit including an integrated circuit substrate at least one optical signal providing element and at least one discrete reflecting optical element mounted onto the integrated circuit substrate, cooperating with the at least one optical signal providing element and being operative to direct light from the at least one optical signal providing element. An electro-optic integrated circuit including an integrated circuit substrate, at least one optical signal receiving element and at least one discrete reflecting optical element mounted onto the integrated circuit substrate and cooperating with the at least one optical signal receiving element and being operative to direct light to the at least one optical signal receiving element.

386 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit comprising:

providing an integrated circuit substrate;

mounting at least one optical fiber, having a core, on said integrated circuit substrate;

forming a transverse notch extending entirely through said core of at least one of said at least one optical fiber, in a manner such that at least one surface extending entirely through said core of said at least one of said at least one optical fiber, defined by said transverse notch is rough;

mounting at least one reflective optical element onto said at least one rough surface extending entirely through said core of said at least one of said at least one optical fiber, defined by said transverse notch, in optical communication with said at least one optical fiber, said mounting employing an adhesive which fills interstices between said rough surface and said at least one reflective optical element.

387 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a flat reflective surface.

388 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a concave mirror.

389 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a partially flat and partially concave mirror.

390 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 389 and wherein said partially concave mirror includes a mirror with multiple concave reflective surfaces.

391 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a reflective grating.

392 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes reflective elements formed on opposite surfaces of an optical substrate.

393 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to focus light received from said at least one optical fiber.

394 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to collimate light received from said at least one optical fiber.

395 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to focus at least one of multiple colors of light received from said at least one optical fiber.

396 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein:

said integrated circuit substrate defines a planar surface; and

said at least one reflective optical element, when fixed to said substrate, has an optical axis which is neither parallel nor perpendicular to said planar surface.

397 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein:

said mounting at least one optical fiber includes wafer scale mounting of said at least one optical fiber;

said forming a transverse notch includes wafer scale formation of said transverse notch;

said mounting at least one reflective optical element includes wafer scale mounting of said at least one reflective optical element; and the method also comprises

subsequent to all of the above steps, dicing said substrate to define a multiplicity of electro-optic circuits.

398 . A method for producing an electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 386 and wherein:

said mounting at least one optical fiber includes wafer scale mounting of said at least one optical fiber;

said forming a transverse notch includes wafer scale formation of said transverse notch;

said mounting at least one reflective optical element includes wafer scale mounting of said at least one reflective optical element; and

the method also comprises:

wafer scale formation of a multiplicity of electro-optic circuits onto said substrate;

wafer scale mounting of at least one integrated circuit component onto said substrate;

wafer scale formation of at least one mechanical connector guide on said substrate;

wafer scale formation of at least one packaging layer over at least one surface of said substrate; and

subsequent to all of the above steps, dicing said substrate to define a multiplicity of electro-optic circuits.

399 . An electro-optic integrated circuit comprising:

an integrated circuit substrate;

at least one optical fiber, having a core, mounted on said integrated circuit substrate;

a transverse notch extending entirely through said core of at least one of said at least one optical fiber, wherein at least one surface extending entirely through said core of said at least one of said at least one optical fiber, defined by said transverse notch, is rough; and

at least one reflective optical element mounted by an adhesive onto said at least one rough surface extending entirely through said core of said at least one of said at least one optical fiber, defined by said transverse notch, in optical communication with said at least one optical fiber, said adhesive filling interstices between said rough surface and said at least one reflective optical element.

400 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a flat reflective surface.

401 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a concave mirror.

402 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a partially flat and partially concave mirror.

403 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 402 and wherein said partially concave mirror includes a mirror with multiple concave reflective surfaces.

404 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes a reflective grating.

405 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element includes reflective elements formed on opposite surfaces of an optical substrate.

406 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to focus light received from said at least one optical fiber.

407 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to collimate light received from said at least one optical fiber.

408 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein said at least one reflective optical element is operative to focus at least one of multiple colors of light received from said at least one optical fiber.

409 . An electro-optic integrated circuit according to claim 399 and wherein:

said integrated circuit substrate defines a planar surface; and

said at least one reflective optical element, when fixed to said substrate, has an optical axis which is neither parallel nor perpendicular to said planar surface.
