Abstract

A process is provided for producing an enriched carboxylic acid compositions produced by contacting composition comprising a carboxylic acid with an enrichment feed in an enrichment zone to form an enriched carboxylic acid composition. This invention also relates to a process and the resulting compositions for removing catalyst from a carboxylic acid composition to produce a post catalyst removal composition.

Claims (121)

1. An isolated isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) at least two of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 49 wt %;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers in an amount ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %;

(d) phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 49 wt %;

(e) 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 3 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(f) 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 49 wt %; and

(g) benzoic acid in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 1000 ppm.

2. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 1 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from at 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

3. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 2 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 750 ppm.

4. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 3 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

5. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 4 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1 wt %.

6. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 5 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1000 ppm.

7. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 6 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount of ranging from 40 ppm to 1 wt %.

8. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 6 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount of ranging from 40 ppm to 2000 ppm.

9. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 7 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 500 ppm.

10. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 1 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from at 50 ppm to 1 wt %.

11. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 10 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 200 ppm to 500 ppm.

12. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 11 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 2000 ppm.

13. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 12 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 2000 ppm.

14. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 13 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 150 ppm to 1000 ppm.

15. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 14 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 0.5 wt %.

16. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 15 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 300 ppm.

17. An isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) at least three of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount ranging from ranging from 50 ppm to 49 wt %;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers in an amount ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %;

(d) phthalic acid in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 49 wt %;

(e) 3-hydroxybenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 3 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(f) 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 49 wt %; and

(g) benzoic acid in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 1000 ppm.

18. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 17 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

19. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 18 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 750 ppm.

20. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 19 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

21. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 20 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1 wt %.

22. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 21 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1000 ppm.

23. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 22 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount of ranging from 40 ppm to 1 wt %.

24. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 23 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 500 ppm.

25. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 17 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 1 wt %.

26. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 25 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 200 ppm to 500 ppm.

27. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 26 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 2000 ppm.

28. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 27 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 2000 ppm.

29. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 28 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 150 ppm to 1000 ppm.

30. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 29 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 0.5 wt %.

31. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 30 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 300 ppm.

32. An isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) at least two of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount of at least 50 ppm;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm; and

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %.

33. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 32 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from at 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

34. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 33 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 50 ppm.

35. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 34 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

36. An isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) all of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount at least 50 ppm;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %.

37. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 36 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

38. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 37 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 750 ppm.

39. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 38 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

40. An isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) at least five of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 49 wt %;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers in an amount ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %;

(d) phthalic acid in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 49 wt %;

(e) 3-hydroxybenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 3 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(f) 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 49 wt %; and

(g) benzoic acid in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 1000 ppm.

41. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 40 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

42. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 41 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 750 ppm.

43. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 42 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

44. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 43 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1 wt %.

45. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 44 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1000 ppm.

46. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 45 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 1 wt %.

47. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 46 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 500 ppm.

48. An isophthalic acid composition comprising:

(1) isophthalic acid in an amount greater than 50 percent by weight;

(2) (a) 3-carboxybenzaldehyde in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or

(b) m-toluic acid in an amount ranging from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm; or both (2) (a) and (2) (b); and

(3) all of the following:

(a) terephthalic acid in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 49 wt %;

(b) benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers in an amount ranging from 140 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(c) 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 49 wt %;

(d) phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 49 wt %;

(e) 3-hydroxybenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 3 ppm to 1000 ppm;

(f) 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 49 wt %; and

(g) benzoic acid in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 1000 ppm.

49. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 48 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 50 ppm to 5 wt %.

50. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 49 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 175 ppm to 750 ppm.

51. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 50 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 1 wt %.

52. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 51 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1 wt %.

53. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 52 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 1000 ppm.

54. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 53 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 40 ppm to 1 wt %.

55. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 54 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 500 ppm.

56. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 48 wherein said terephthalic acid is in an amount ranging from at 50 ppm to 1 wt %.

57. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 56 wherein said benzene-tricarboxylic acid isomers are in an amount ranging from 200 ppm to 500 ppm.

58. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 57 wherein said 3,3′-dicarboxybiphenyl is in an amount ranging from 25 ppm to 2000 ppm.

59. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 58 wherein said phthalic acid is in an amount ranging from 20 ppm to 2000 ppm.

60. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 59 wherein said 3-hydroxybenzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 150 ppm to 1000 ppm.

61. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 60 wherein said 3-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid is in an amount of ranging from 40 ppm to 0.5 wt %.

62. An isophthalic acid composition according to claim 61 wherein said benzoic acid is in an amount ranging from 60 ppm to 300 ppm.
