Abstract

A method is disclosed for application of compositions onto non-woven webs, such as paper webs. The present invention is also directed to products made from the process. In general, the method includes applying a composition to a non-woven web using a non-impact printer, such as an ink jet printer. The composition is applied, in one embodiment, as droplets that remain as discrete shapes on the substrate. In this manner, treated areas and untreated areas are formed on the web. Through this process, the water absorption and control properties of the web can be adjusted as desired while simultaneously treating the web with a composition that improves the physical and/or chemical properties of the web.

Claims (39)

1. A paper product comprising:

a paper sheet comprising pulp fibers; and

a topical composition applied to at least one side of the paper sheet, the composition comprising a chemical additive, the composition being applied to the sheet in the form of discrete droplets via a non-impact printing process, the droplets forming treated areas on the sheet separated by untreated areas such that the discrete droplets are spaced apart from adjacent droplets, the sheet having a wet out time of less than about 10 seconds.

2. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the paper sheet comprises a single ply paper web.

3. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the paper sheet comprises three plies of paper webs including first and second outer plies and a middle ply.

4. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the paper product comprises a bath tissue or a facial tissue.

5. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the paper product comprises a paper towel.

6. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 2 mm after being applied to the sheet.

7. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 200 microns after being applied to the sheet.

8. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 100 microns after being applied to the sheet.

9. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 50 microns after being applied to the sheet.

10. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 10 microns after being applied to the sheet.

11. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the paper product after being treated with the composition has a wet out time of less than about 5 seconds.

12. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the treated areas on the sheet comprise from about 5% to about 90% of the surface area of the at least one side of the sheet.

13. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the treated areas on the sheet comprise from about 5% to about 60% of the surface area of the at least one side of the sheet.

14. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a silicone.

15. The paper product as defined in claim 14 , wherein the silicone comprises:

wherein, x and y are integers such that at least one of x or y is >0, the mole ratio of x to (x+y) can be from about 0 percent to about 80 percent, and the R 1 -R 10 moieties can be independently any organofunctional group including C, or higher alkyl groups, ethers, polyethers, polyesters, amines, imines, amides, or other functional groups including the alkyl and alkyl analogues of such groups and including mixtures of said groups.

16. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the composition is hydrophobic.

17. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a wax.

18. The paper product as defined in claim 1 , wherein the chemical additive is selected from the group of anti-acne actives, antimicrobial actives, antifungal actives, antiseptic actives, antioxidants, cosmetic astringents, drug astringents, aiological additives, deodorants, emollients, external analgesics, film formers, fragrances, humectants, natural moisturizing agents, opacifiers, skin conditioning agents, skin exfoliating agents, skin protectants, solvents, sunscreens, surfactants, lotions, softeners, and combinations thereof.

19. A paper product comprising:

a paper sheet comprising pulp fibers; and

a topical composition applied to at least one side of the paper sheet, the composition comprising a chemical additive, the chemical additive comprising a softener, the composition being applied to the sheet in the form of discrete droplets via a non-impact printing process, wherein the droplets are spaced apart from each other, the sheet having a wet out time of less than about 10 seconds.

20. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the composition comprises a silicone.

21. The paper product as defined in claim 20 , wherein the silicone comprises:

22. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the composition is hydrophobic.

23. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 2 mm after being applied to the sheet.

24. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 200 microns after being applied to the sheet.

25. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 50 microns after being applied to the sheet.

26. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the droplets have a diameter of less than about 10 microns after being applied to the sheet.

27. The paper product as defined in claim 19 , wherein the paper product after being treated with the composition has a wet out time of less than about 5 seconds.

28. A paper product comprising:

a paper sheet comprising pulp fibers; and

a topical composition applied to at least one side of the paper sheet, the composition comprising a chemical additive, the chemical additive comprising a lotion, the composition being applied to the sheet in the form of discrete droplets via a non-impact printing process, wherein the droplets are spaced apart from each other, the sheet having a wet out time of less than about 10 seconds.

29. The paper product as defined in claim 28 , wherein the lotion comprises a water-based lotion.

30. The paper product as defined in claim 28 , wherein the lotion comprises an oil-based lotion.

31. The paper product as defined in claim 30 , wherein the oil-based lotion comprises an oil and a wax.
