Tissue removal apparatus
A method and apparatus are disclosed for removal of material from a body. The apparatus comprises an elongate member defining a lumen and comprising a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end of the elongate member defines an aperture. The apparatus further comprises a tissue removal member. The tissue removal member comprises a shaft rotatably disposed within the lumen of the elongate member. The apparatus further comprises a rigid cannula for inserting the elongate member into a patient's body. The cannula defines a lumen for receiving the elongate member, and has a proximal open end and a distal open end communicating with the lumen of the cannula.
1 . An apparatus for removal of material from a body, the apparatus comprising:
an elongate member defining a lumen and comprising a proximal end and a distal end, said distal end defining an aperture;
a tissue removal member comprising a shaft rotatably disposed within said lumen; and
a rigid cannula for inserting said elongate member into said body, the cannula defining a lumen for receiving the elongate member, the cannula having a proximal open end and a distal open end communicating with said lumen of said cannula.
2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an obturator removably disposed within the lumen of the cannula for occluding the distal open end of the cannula.
3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said obturator has a distal end, said distal end being substantially sharp such that it may pierce skin.
4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a handpiece operatively connected to said tissue removal member.
5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a motorized source of rotational energy operatively connected to said tissue removal member.
6 . The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a motorized source of rotational energy operatively connected to said tissue removal member wherein said handpiece comprises means for engaging and disengaging said motorized source of rotational energy.
7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said tissue removal member is a shaft having at least one outwardly extending projection.
8 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said at least one outwardly extending projection forms at least one helix.
9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said tissue removal member is an auger.
10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a receptacle operatively connected to the elongate member for receiving the material removed from the body, said elongate member defining at least one opening for transferring material from said elongate member to said receptacle.
11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said receptacle is structured to be detached from said elongate member.
12 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said receptacle is at least partially pervious to light.
13 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said receptacle comprises means for measuring the volume of tissue disposed within said receptacle.
14 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said elongate member is at least partially pervious to light.
15 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cannula comprises at least one radiopaque marker.
16 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cannula comprises at least one injection port.
17 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cannula comprises at least one depth marker.
18 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cannula is between about 5.5 and about 7.5 inches in length.
19 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cannula is made from a material selected from the group consisting of stainless steels and nickel titanium alloys.
20 . A kit comprising:
a motor;
a handpiece structured to house said motor;
an elongate member defining a lumen and comprising a proximal end and an open distal end, said proximal end being operatively connected to said handpiece;
an auger sized to fit within said lumen, the auger comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the auger proximal end being operatively connected to said motor;
a receptacle;
a cannula; and
an obturator.
21 . The kit according to 19 , wherein the elongate member is bent.
