Abstract

An automated banking machine system and method includes ATMs which accept checks and dispense cash to users. The ATMs are operated to acquire image and magnetic data from deposited checks to determine the genuineness of checks and the authority of a user to receive cash for such checks. Cash may be dispensed to the user from the ATM in exchange for the deposited check. The ATMs dispense cash responsive to communications with a transaction host.

Claims (33)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an ATM including:

 a display;

 a card reader;

 a printer;

 a keypad;

 a cash dispenser;

 a check accepting device including optical sensors operative to generate appearance data corresponding to appearance of at least a portion of checks received in the check accepting device;

 at least one processor and at least one data store, wherein the at least one processor is in operative connection with the at least one data store, the check accepting device, the cash dispenser, the keypad, the printer, the card reader, and the display;

wherein the at least one processor has software operating therein, wherein the software includes area selection software and character recognition software,

 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to the area selection software to select first area appearance data corresponding to at least one first area of a check received in the check accepting device,

wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to the character recognition software to determine if the first area appearance data includes character data corresponding to at least one visible character, an identity of which at least one character is resolved through operation of the character recognition software based on the first area appearance data with at least a programmed level of assurance,

 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to determining that the first area appearance data does not include the character data, to select second area appearance data responsive to the area selection software, the second area appearance data corresponding to at least one second area of the check, the at least one second area being different from the at least one first area,

wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to the character recognition software to determine if the second area appearance data includes the character data corresponding to the at least one visible character, the identity of which at least one character is resolved through operation of the character recognition software based on the second area appearance data with at least the programmed level of assurance.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one character comprises at least one of routing and transfer micr characters.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one character comprises a dollar amount.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one data store includes analysis data corresponding to a plurality of areas in a plurality of check formats, wherein each of the plurality of areas correspond to an area in a check format in which at least one visible character is located, and wherein the area selection software is operative to select at least one of the first area appearance data and the second area appearance data responsive to the analysis data.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the analysis data corresponds to a plurality of templates, wherein each of the templates corresponds to a check format, wherein each of the templates includes data corresponding to at least one template area wherein each template area corresponds to an area in a check format where at least one visible character is located.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to the area selection software to select the first area appearance data responsive to at least one template.

7. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to appearance data to resolve determined check data, wherein the determined check data corresponds to at least one micr data and a courtesy amount included on the check.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the card reader to read card data from a card input by a user providing the check, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the ATM to send at least one first message including data corresponding to at least a portion of the card data and the determined check data, from the ATM to at least one remote host computer.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to at least one second message received by the ATM from the at least one remote host computer, to cause the cash dispenser to operate to dispense cash to the user depositing the check.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause appearance data corresponding to a visual image of at least one side of the check to be stored in the at least one data store.

11. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to appearance, data to cause the printer to print on paper a visual image of at least one side of the check, and the ATM is operative to provide the paper including the visual image to the user who deposited the check.

12. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to appearance, data to cause the display to output a visual image of at least one side of the check to the user who deposited the check in the ATM.

13. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the ATM to output at least one third message to a remote server, the remote server being other than the at least one remote host computer, the at least one third message including appearance data corresponding to a visual image of at least one side of the check.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the at least one second message received by the ATM from the at least one remote host computer includes correlation data, wherein the correlation data is usable to identify a transaction at the ATM in which the check is received, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to include at least a portion of the correlation data in the at least one third message.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause at least a portion of the determined check data to be included in the at least one third message.

16. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the check accepting device includes at least one magnetic sensor, wherein the at least one magnetic sensor is operative to generate magnetic data corresponding to magnetic characters included on the check.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine if the location of at least one magnetic character on the check corresponds with at least one visible character on the check.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one magnetic sensor comprises a magnetic read head, and wherein the check accepting device includes at least one first drive operative to move the check in a first direction, and at least two second drives disposed from one another in the first direction, wherein each of the first and at least two second drives are each in operative connection with the at least one processor, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the at least two second drives to operate to cause at least one magnetic character on the check to be aligned with the read head, and thereafter to cause the first drive to operate to move the check in the first direction such that the at least one magnetic character moves past the read head.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the check accepting device includes a plurality of check sensors in operative connection with the at least one processor, wherein at least two of the check sensors are spaced along the first direction, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the at least two second drives to operate to align the check relative to the read head responsive to sensing the check with the at least two check sensors.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the check accepting device is in operative connection with a storage location in the ATM, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the check to be moved to the storage location responsive to the at least one second message from the remote host computer.
