Abstract

An automated banking machine system and method includes ATMs which accept checks and dispense cash to users. The ATMs are operated to acquire image and magnetic data from deposited checks to determine the genuineness of checks and the authority of a user to receive cash for such checks. Cash may be dispensed to the user from the ATM in exchange for the deposited check. The ATMs dispense cash responsive to communications with a transaction host.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

(a) accessing an interior area of a housing of an automated banking machine including a cash dispenser;

(b) subsequent to (a), opening a door to a storage area in the interior area, wherein the storage area includes a first stack comprising a plurality of documents, wherein at least a generally vertically extending transport portion of a document transport extends in the storage area, and wherein the first stack is positioned in intermediate relation between the transport portion and a first backing plate, wherein the first backing plate is movable relative to the door;

(c) moving the first backing plate in a direction generally horizontally away from the transport portion;

(d) subsequent to (c), removing the first stack from the storage area.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the storage area comprises a second stack comprising a plurality of documents, and wherein the second stack is positioned intermediate of the transport portion and a second backing plate, and wherein the second stack is positioned on a horizontal side of the transport portion opposite of the first stack, and further comprising:

(e) moving the second backing plate in a direction generally horizontally away from the transport portion;

(f) subsequent to (e), removing the second stack from the storage area.

3. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(g) subsequent to (d), closing a door to cover the storage area.

4. The method according to claim 3 wherein in (d) the first stack comprises a plurality of checks.

5. The method according to claim 4 wherein in (f) the second stack comprises a plurality of currency bills.

6. The method according to claim 3 wherein in (d) the first stack comprises a plurality of currency bills.

7. The method according to claim 3 wherein the storage area includes a movable plunger, wherein the plunger is movable generally horizontally through the transport portion, and wherein in (d) the first stack is removed from intermediate of the plunger and the first backing plate.

8. The method according to claim 3 wherein the first backing plate comprises a first tab portion and is biased generally horizontally toward the transport portion by a first biasing mechanism, and wherein (c) comprises manually engaging the first tab portion and moving the first tab portion generally horizontally away from the transport portion against the force of the first biasing mechanism.

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein the second backing plate comprises a second tab portion and is biased generally horizontally toward the transport portion by a second biasing mechanism, and wherein (e) comprises manually engaging the second tab portion and moving the second tab portion generally horizontally away from the transport portion against the force of the second biasing mechanism.

10. The method according to claim 9 wherein the door includes a lock, and further comprising:

(h) subsequent to (a) and prior to (b), unlocking the lock.

11. The method according to claim 10 and subsequent to (g), securing the lock.

12. The method according to claim 9 , whereinthe storage area is within a deposit accepting device including at least one deposit document transport, and at least one platen movably mounted in supporting connection with the deposit accepting device, and further comprising:

moving the platen away from the at least one deposit document transport.

13. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the storage area is within a deposit accepting device movably mounted in supporting connection with the housing, and further comprising:

subsequent to (a) and prior to (b), moving the deposit accepting device such that the storage area extends outside the housing;

wherein during at least a portion of (b) the storage area extends outside the housing.

14. The method according to claim 13 and further comprising:

(h) subsequent to (g), moving the deposit accepting device so that the storage area extends within the housing.

15. The method according to claim 14 and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (h), accepting a check in the machine and generating image data corresponding to an image of the check through operation of the deposit accepting device.

16. The method according to claim 15 and further comprising:

(j) subsequent to (h) dispensing cash from the automated banking machine.

17. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(e) dispensing cash from the automated banking machine.

18. A method comprising:

(a) opening at least one access mechanism to access an interior door in an interior area of an automated banking machine including a cash dispenser;

(b) with the access mechanism open, manually opening the interior door to access a storage area of the machine, wherein the storage area includes a stack of documents, wherein each document in the stack is horizontally positioned next to an adjacent document in the stack, and wherein a horizontal biasing force acts against the stack;

(c) with the interior door open, manually providing an opposing force against the biasing force; and

(d) manually removing the stack from the storage area of the machine while an opposing force is provided against the biasing force.

19. The method according to claim 18 wherein the stack includes at least one accepted document accepted into the machine from a machine user, wherein the at least one accepted document comprises at least a financial check or a currency bill, and wherein step (d) includes manually removing the at least one accepted document from the storage area.

20. A method comprising:

(a) accessing an interior area of a housing of an automated banking machine including a cash dispenser;

(b) opening a door to a storage area of the machine in the interior area, wherein the storage area includes a first stack comprising a plurality of documents, wherein the storage area comprises a second stack comprising a plurality of documents, wherein a first member is biased toward the first stack, wherein a second member is biased toward the second stack;

(c) manually moving in the machine, the first member in a direction away from the first stack;

(d) subsequent to (c), manually removing at least one document associated with the first stack from the storage area;

(e) manually moving in the machine, the second member in a direction away from the second stack; and

(f) subsequent to (e), manually removing at least one document associated with the second stack from the storage area.
