Artificial functional spinal implant unit system and method for use
A stabilization system for a human spine is provided comprising at least one dynamic interbody device and at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems. The dynamic posterior stabilization system may be coupled on contralateral sides of vertebrae. In some embodiments, a bridge may couple a dynamic interbody device to a dynamic posterior stabilization system.
1. A bone stabilization system for a human spine comprising:
a first dynamic interbody device configured to be positioned between a first vertebra and a second vertebra of the human spine, wherein the first dynamic interbody device is configured to facilitate movement of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra;
a first dynamic posterior stabilization system configured to posteriorly couple to the first vertebra and the second vertebra, wherein the first dynamic posterior stabilization system is configured to facilitate and provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra facilitated by the first dynamic interbody device; and
a second dynamic posterior stabilization system configured to posteriorly couple to the first vertebra and the second vertebra,
wherein at least one of the first and second posterior stabilization systems comprises:
a first bone fastener configured to be coupled to the first vertebra;
a second bone fastener configured to be coupled to the second vertebra;
an elongate member configured to be coupled to the first bone fastener and the second bone fastener, wherein the elongate member is configured to extend through an opening in the second bone fastener; and
a bias member configured to at least partially surround a portion of the elongate member, wherein the bias member is configured to provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein the bias member comprises a first bias member portion configured to be disposed about the elongate member on one side of the second bone fastener and a second bias member portion configured to be disposed about the elongate member on the other side of the second bone fastener.
2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a transverse connector configured to couple a bone fastener of the first dynamic posterior stabilization system to a bone fastener of the second dynamic posterior stabilization system.
3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second dynamic interbody device configured to be positioned between the first vertebra and the second vertebra, wherein a majority of the first dynamic interbody device is configured to be disposed on a first side of a sagittal plane of the human spine and wherein a majority of the second dynamic interbody device is configured to be disposed on a second side of the sagittal plane of the human spine.
4. The system of claim 3 , further comprising a bridge configured to be coupled between the second dynamic interbody device the second dynamic posterior stabilization system.
5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a bridge configured to be coupled between the dynamic interbody device and the first dynamic posterior stabilization system.
6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the bridge is configured to inhibit posterior migration of the first dynamic interbody device when the bridge is coupled to the first dynamic posterior stabilization system, and the first dynamic posterior stabilization system is coupled to vertebrae.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first dynamic posterior stabilization system is not directly coupled to the second dynamic posterior stabilization system.
8. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the opening in the second bone fastener comprises a slot.
9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a closure member configured to be coupled to the second bone fastener to secure at least a portion of the elongated member in the opening in the second bone fastener.
10. A method of stabilizing a human spine, comprising:
installing at least two dynamic interbody devices between a first vertebra and a second vertebra using a posterior surgical approach, wherein one or more of the at least two dynamic interbody devices is configured to facilitate movement of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein a majority of a first dynamic interbody device of the at least two dynamic interbody devices is configured to be disposed on a first side of a sagittal plane of the human spine and wherein a majority of a second dynamic interbody device of the at least two dynamic interbody devices is configured to be disposed on a second side of the sagittal plane of the human spine; and
posteriorly installing at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems to couple the first vertebra to the second vertebra, wherein the at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems are configured to facilitate and provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra facilitated by one or more of the at least two dynamic interbody devices,
wherein posteriorly installing at least one of the dynamic posterior stabilization systems comprises:
coupling a first bone fastener to the first vertebra;
coupling a second bone fastener to the second vertebra;
coupling an elongate member to the first bone fastener and the second bone fastener, wherein the elongate member is configured to extend through an opening in the second bone fastener; and
providing a bias member that at least partially surrounds a portion of the elongate member, wherein the bias member is configured to provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein the bias member comprises a first bias member portion disposed about the elongate member on one side of the second bone fastener and a second bias member portion disposed about the elongate member on the other side of the second bone fastener.
11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling at least one dynamic interbody device to at least one dynamic posterior stabilization system.
12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling a bridge between at least one of the at least two dynamic interbody devices and one or more of the at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems to inhibit posterior migration of at least one dynamic interbody device.
13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising connecting a first dynamic posterior stabilization system coupled to the first vertebra and the second vertebra to a second dynamic posterior stabilization system coupled to the first vertebra and the second vertebra.
14. The method of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the dynamic posterior stabilization systems comprises a multi-level dynamic posterior stabilization system.
15. The method of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the opening in the second bone fastener comprises a slot.
16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling a closure member to the second bone fastener to secure at least a portion of the elongated member in the opening in the second bone fastener.
17. A method of stabilizing a human spine, comprising:
installing a dynamic interbody device between a first vertebra and a second vertebra using an anterior surgical approach, wherein the dynamic interbody devices is configured to facilitate movement of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein the dynamic interbody device comprises an expandable height; and
posteriorly installing at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems to couple the first vertebra to the second vertebra, wherein the dynamic posterior stabilization systems are configured to facilitate and provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra facilitated by the first dynamic interbody device,
wherein posteriorly installing at least one of dynamic posterior stabilization systems comprises:
coupling a first bone fastener to the first vertebra;
coupling a second bone fastener to the second vertebra;
coupling an elongate member to the first bone fastener and the second bone fastener, wherein the elongate member extends through an opening in the second bone fastener; and
providing a bias member that at least partially surrounds a portion of the elongate member, wherein the bias member is configured to provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein the bias member comprises a first bias member portion disposed about the elongate member on one side of the second bone fastener and a second bias member portion disposed about the elongate member on the other side of the second bone fastener.
18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling the dynamic interbody device to at least one dynamic posterior stabilization system.
19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling a bridge between the dynamic interbody device and one or more of the at least two dynamic posterior stabilization systems to inhibit posterior migration of the dynamic interbody device.
20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising connecting a first dynamic posterior stabilization system coupled to the first vertebra and the second vertebra to a second dynamic posterior stabilization system coupled to the first vertebra and the second vertebra.
21. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the dynamic posterior stabilization systems comprises a multi-level dynamic posterior stabilization system.
22. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the dynamic posterior stabilization systems provides resistance to at least some movement allowed by the dynamic interbody device.
23. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the opening in the second bone fastener comprises a slot.
24. The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling a closure member to the second bone fastener to secure at least a portion of the elongated member in the opening in the second bone fastener.
25. A bone stabilization system for a human spine comprising:
a first dynamic posterior stabilization system configured to be posteriorly coupled to a first vertebra and a second vertebra, wherein the first dynamic posterior stabilization system comprises:
a first bone fastener configured to be coupled to the first vertebra;
a second bone fastener configured to be coupled to the second vertebra;
an elongate member configured to be coupled to the first bone fastener and the second bone fastener, wherein the elongate member is configured to move relative to at least one of the first bone fastener and the second bone fastener during use, wherein the elongate member is configured to extend through an opening in the second bone fastener; and
a bias member configured to at least partially surround a portion of the elongate member, wherein the bias member is configured to provide dynamic resistance to motion of the first vertebra relative to the second vertebra, and wherein the bias member comprises a first bias member portion configured to be disposed about the elongate member on one side of the second bone fastener and a second bias member portion configured to be disposed about the elongate member on the other side of the second bone fastener;
a second dynamic posterior stabilization system configured to posteriorly couple to the first vertebra and the second vertebra; and
a first dynamic interbody device configured to be positioned between the first vertebra and the second vertebra.
26. The system of claim 25 , wherein at least a portion of the opening in the second bone fastener comprises a slot.
27. The system of claim 25 , further comprising a closure member configured to be coupled to the second bone fastener to secure at least a portion of the elongated member in the opening in the second bone fastener.
