Abstract

The invention concerns an illumination system for generation of colored, especially amber or red light, comprising a radiation source and a fluorescent material comprising at least one phosphor capable of absorbing a part of light emitted by the radiation source and emitting light of wavelength different from that of the absorbed light; wherein said at least one phosphor is a amber to red emitting a rare earth metal-activated oxonitridoalumosilicate of general formula (Ca 1−x−y−z Sr x Ba y Mg z ) 1−n (Al 1−a+b B a )Si 1−b N 3−b O b :RE n , wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦1, 0≦z≦1, 0≦a≦1, 0<b≦1 and 0.002≦n≦0.2 and RE is selected from europium(II) and cerium(III).

Claims (20)

1. A illumination system, comprising a radiation source and a fluorescent material comprising at least one phosphor capable of absorbing a part of light emitted by the radiation source and emitting light of wavelength different from that of the absorbed light; wherein said at least one phosphor is a rare earth metal-activated oxonitridoalumosilicate of general formula (Ca 1−x−y−z Sr x Ba y Mg z ) 1−n (Al 1−a+b B a )Si 1−b N 3−b O b :RE n , wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦1, 0≦z≦1, 0≦a≦1, 0<b≦1 and 0.002≦n≦0.2 and RE is selected from europium(II) and cerium(III).

2. The illumination system according to claim 1 , wherein the radiation source is a solid state light emitting diode.

3. The illumination system according to claim 1 , wherein the radiation source is selected from the light emitting diodes having an emission with a peak emission wavelength in the range of 400 to 495 nm.

4. The illumination system according to claim 3 , wherein the fluorescent material comprises a second phosphor.

5. The illumination system according to claim 4 wherein the second phosphor is a red phosphor selected from the group Ca 1−x−y Sr x S:Eu y , wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦0.2; and (Sr 1−x−y Ba x Ca y ) 2 Si 5 N 8 :Eu z wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦1, 0<z≦0.2.

The illumination system according to claim 4 , wherein the second phosphor is a yellow to green phosphor selected from the group comprising (Ca x Sr 1−x−y ) 2 SiO 4 :Eu y , wherein 0≦x≦1 and 0<y≦0.2, (Sr x Ba 1−x−y ) 2 SiO 4 :Eu y , wherein 0≦x≦1 and 0<y≦0.2, (Sr 1−x−y Ba x )Ga 2 S 4 :Eu y wherein 0≦x≦1 and 0<y≦0.2, (Y 1−x−y−z Gd x Lu z )(Al 1−a Ga a ) 5 O 12 :Ce y , wherein 0≦x≦1 and 0<y≦0.2, 0≦z≦1, 0≦a≦0.5, ZnS:Cu, CaS:Ce, Cl, and SrSi 2 N 2 O 2 :Eu.

7. The illumination system according to claim 1 , wherein the radiation source is selected from the light emitting diodes having an emission with a peak emission wavelength in the UV range of 200 to 420 nm.

8. The illumination system according to claim 7 , wherein the fluorescent material comprises a second phosphor.

9. The illumination system according to claim 8 , wherein the second phosphor is a blue phosphor selected from the group of BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu, Ba 5 SiO 4 (Cl,Br) 6 Eu, CaLa 2 S 4 :Ce, (Sr,Ba,Ca) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl:Eu and LaSi 3 N 5 :Ce.

A phosphor capable of absorbing a part of light emitted by the radiation source and emitting light of wavelength different from that of the absorbed light; wherein said phosphor is a rare earth metal-activated oxonitridoalumosilicate of general formula (Ca 1−x−y−z Sr x Ba y Mg z ) 1−n (Al 1−a+b B a )Si 1−b N 3−b O b :RE n , wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦1, 0≦z≦1, 0≦a≦1, 0≦b≦1 and 0.002≦N≦0.2 and RE is selected from europium(II) and cerium(III).

11. The phosphor according to claim 10 , wherein the phosphor has a coating selected from the group of fluorides and orthophosphates of aluminum, scandium, yttrium, lanthanum gadolinium and lutetium, oxides of silicon, aluminum, yttrium and lanthanum and nitride of aluminum.

12. A structure comprising:

a semiconductor light emitting diode configured to emit light having a first peak wavelength;

a rare earth metal-activated oxonitridoalumosilicate of general formula (Ca 1−x−y−z Sr x Ba y Mg z ) 1−n (Al 1−a+b B a )Si 1−b N 3−b O b :RE n , wherein 0≦x≦1, 0≦y≦1, 0≦z≦1, 0≦a≦1, 0<b≦1 and 0.002≦n≦0.2 and RE is selected from europium(II) and cerium(III) configured to absorb light of the first peak wavelength and emit light of a second peak wavelength; and

a phosphor configured to absorb light of the first peak wavelength and emit light of third peak wavelength;

wherein the second peak wavelength and the third peak wavelength are longer than the first peak wavelength.

13. The structure of claim 12 wherein the first peak wavelength is blue and the second peak wavelength is red.

14. The structure of claim 12 wherein the phosphor is Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ .

15. The structure of claim 12 wherein the structure emits composite light comprising light of the first peak wavelength, light ,of the second peak wavelength, and light of the third peak wavelength, wherein the composite light has a color rendering index Ra of at least 80.

16. The structure of claim 12 wherein the structure emits composite light comprising light of the first peak wavelength, light of the second peak wavelength and light of the third peak wavelength has a color rendering index R9 of at least 20.
