Abstract

Described are methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for active switch replacement using a single point code. Signaling data associated with the point code is received via signaling links associated with the active switch. The signaling data is routed to a replacement switch if the signaling data is associated with voice trunks associated with the replacement switch. The signaling data is routed to the active switch if the signaling data is associated with voice trunks associated with the active switch.

Claims (48)

1. A method for replacing an active telephony switch connected to a PSTN, the active telephony switch initially being connected to a plurality of voice trunks and a plurality of signaling links and being assigned a point code, the method comprising:

employing a first set of voice trunks from the plurality of voice trunks as active media circuits while an intermediate replacement configuration is maintained, the intermediate replacement configuration being formed by:

serially connecting a signaling gateway associated with a replacement switch on the plurality of signaling links;

disconnecting a second set of voice trunks from the active telephony switch, the second set of voice trunks comprising less media circuits than the first set of voice trunks; and

connecting the second set of voice trunks to the replacement switch.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising locating the signaling gateway within the replacement switch.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising serially connecting the signaling gateway at a point between the active telephony switch and the PSTN.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising testing signals transmitted via the signaling links.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

disconnecting remaining voice trunks from the active telephony switch in the plurality not included in the second set of voice trunks;

connecting the remaining voice trunks to the replacement switch; and

disconnecting the signaling links from the active telephony switch.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

testing signals transmitted via the second set of voice trunks prior to disconnecting the remaining voice trunks.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving signaling data associated with the point code via the signaling links;

routing the signaling data to the replacement switch if the signaling data is associated with the second set of voice trunks; and

routing the signaling data to the active telephony switch if the signaling data is associated with voice trunks not included in the second set of voice trunks.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of signaling links comprise ‘f’ links, the method further comprising:

moving all ‘f’ links prior to moving non ‘f’ links.

9. A method for replacing an active telephony switch connected to a PSTN, the active telephony switch being connected to a plurality of voice trunks and a plurality of signaling links and being assigned a point code, the method comprising:

defining a replacement switch and a signaling gateway associated with the replacement switch;

serially connecting the signaling gateway on a first set of signaling links from the plurality of signaling links;

serially connecting the signaling gateway on remaining signaling links from the plurality not included in the first set of signaling links before each voice trunk is disconnected from the active telephony switch;

disconnecting a first set of voice trunks from the active telephony switch;

connecting the first set of voice trunks to the replacement switch;

disconnecting remaining voice trunks from the active telephony switch in the plurality not included in the first set of voice trunks;

connecting the remaining voice trunks to the replacement switch; and

disconnecting the signaling links from the active telephony switch.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

testing signals transmitted via the first set of signaling links; and

testing signals transmitted via the first set of voice trunks.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving signaling data associated with the point code via the signaling links prior to disconnecting the remaining voice trunks;

routing the signaling data to the replacement switch if the signaling data is associated with the first set of voice trunks; and

routing the signaling data to the active telephony switch if the signaling data is associated with voice trunks not included in the first set of voice trunks.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of signaling links comprise ‘f’ links, the method further comprising:

moving all ‘f’ links prior to moving non ‘f’ links.

13. A system for replacing an active telephony switch connected to a PSTN, the active telephony switch initially being connected to a plurality of voice trunks and a plurality of signaling links and being assigned a point code, the system comprising:

a replacement telephony switch connected to a portion of the plurality of voice trunks initially connected to the active telephony switch and associated with the point code;

a signaling gateway in communication with the replacement switch and the active telephony switch and connected on the plurality of signaling links, the signaling gateway being adapted to route signaling data, which is associated with the point code and trunk groups connected to the active telephony switch, to the active telephony switch and to route signaling data, which is associated with the point code and trunk groups connected to the replacement telephony switch, to the replacement telephony switch.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the signaling gateway is located within the replacement switch.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the signaling gateway is serially connected at a point between the active telephony switch and the PSTN.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the signaling gateway communicates with the replacement telephony switch through a packet network.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the replacement telephony switch comprises a packet-based switch and the active telephony switch comprises a circuit-based switch.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the gateway comprises a multiplexer.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the gateway comprises a plurality of logical nodes.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of logical nodes includes a first logical node that acts as an endpoint to the PSTN that has been assigned the single point code and a second logical node that acts as the PSTN to the active switch.
