Abstract

A system and method for reporting a status of an asset is described. In one embodiment, an asset status is determined based on configurable parameters to thereby enable accurate reporting of departures and arrivals of an asset.

Claims (35)

1. A method of reporting a position of a transport vehicle, comprising:

a. recording, by a mobile terminal system, time and position information upon detection of a transition from a first operational condition to a second operational condition of the transport vehicle;

b. during a time period that starts after said detected change, tracking further transitions between said first operational condition and said second operational condition;

c. determining, by said mobile terminal system, an amount of time in said time period that the transport vehicle remained in said second operational condition;

d. reporting, by said mobile terminal system, said time and said position information to a site remote from the transport vehicle if said determined amount of time is greater than a threshold, wherein said time and position information are not reported if said determined amount of time is less than a threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first operational condition is a motion condition and said second operational condition is a no-motion condition.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first operational condition is a no-motion condition and said second operational condition is a motion condition.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said position information is code phase measurement information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said time period and said predefined portion are configurable parameters.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising receiving a configurable parameter at the transport vehicle location via satellite.

7. A mobile terminal system for reporting a position of a transport vehicle, comprising:

a. a vibration sensor;

b. a motion detection component that receives input based on readings of said vibration sensor, said motion detection component determining an operating condition of the transport vehicle through an analysis of said received input;

c. a recording component that records time and position information upon detection of a change from a first operational condition to a second operational condition of the transport vehicle;

d. a reporting component that reports said time and said position information to a site remote from the transport vehicle if it is determined that the transport vehicle remained in said second operational condition for greater than a predefined portion of a time period that commences after said detected change, wherein said reporting component does not report said time and position information to said site if it is determined that the transport vehicle remained in said second operational condition for less than said predefined portion of said time period.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein said first operational condition is a motion condition and said second operational condition is a no-motion condition.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein said first operational condition is a no-motion condition and said second operational condition is a motion condition.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein said position information is code phase measurement information.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein said time period and said predefined portion are configurable parameters.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising receiving a configurable parameter at the transport vehicle location via satellite.

13. A position reporting method, comprising:

a. recording, by a mobile terminal system, time and position information upon detection of a change from a first operational condition to a second operational condition of the transport vehicle; and

b. reporting, by said mobile terminal system, said time and said position information to a site remote from the transport vehicle if it is determined that the transport vehicle remained in said second operational condition for greater than a first percentage of a predefined time period that commences after said detection of said change, wherein said mobile terminal system does not report said time and position information if the transport vehicle remained in said first operational condition for greater than a second percentage of said predefined time period.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein said first operational condition is a motion condition and said second operational condition is a no-motion condition.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein said mobile terminal system ceases all reports as long as the transport vehicle continues in a no-motion state.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein said first operational condition is a no-motion condition and said second operational condition is a motion condition.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said mobile terminal system reports time and position information periodically if it is determined that the transport vehicle is in a motion state.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein said position information is code phase measurement information.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein said predefined time period is a configurable parameter.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising receiving a configurable parameter at the transport vehicle location via satellite.

21. A reporting method in a mobile terminal affixed to a transport vehicle, comprising:

a. detecting a change in condition of the transport vehicle from a stationary condition to a moving condition, wherein prior to said detected change, the transport vehicle is established as being in a non-moving state;

b. after a time period has elapsed after said detected change, determining whether the transport vehicle remained in said moving condition for predefined percentage of said time period;

c. reporting that the transport vehicle has entered into a moving state if it is determined that the transport vehicle remained in said moving condition for greater than a predefined percentage of said time period; and

d. maintaining the transport vehicle in said non-moving state if it is determined that the transport vehicle remained in said moving condition for less than said predefined percentage of said time period.
