Abstract

Devices and methods of use for brush holders are disclosed. A brush holder assembly including a brush catch and a brush release is disclosed. Also illustrated is a brush holder assembly including a first portion in sliding engagement with a second portion. Sliding engagement of the first portion with the second portion may selectively engage and/or disengage a brush catch with a brush. In some embodiments the brush catch is disengaged from the brush when the brush holder is in a locked position and is engaged with the brush when the brush holder is in an unlocked position. Methods and devices for selectively placing a brush holder in a locked or unlocked position are also disclosed.

Claims (12)

1. A brush holder assembly for holding a brush in contact with a moving conductive surface, the brush holder assembly comprising:

a mounting block configured to extend from a stationary base, the mounting block having an overall width; and

a removable component for selective coupling to the mounting block, the removable component including a brush holder for holding the brush, and a beam for selectively coupling the removable component to the mounting block, the beam defining a channel, wherein the mounting block extends into the channel of the beam when the removable component is selectively coupled to the mounting block, wherein the removable component has an overall width greater than the width of the mounting block and wherein the brush holder has a width that is greater than the width of the mounting block.

2. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the mounting block has an overall thickness, and the removable component has an overall thickness greater than the overall thickness of the mounting block.

3. The brush holder assembly of claim 2 , wherein the thickness of the brush holder is greater than the thickness of the mounting block.

4. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the mounting block has a first outer side surface and an opposing second outer side surface, and the channel has a first interior surface and an opposing second interior surface;

wherein, when the beam is selectively coupled to the mounting block, the first outer side surface of the mounting block is adjacent to the first interior surface of the channel and the second outer side surface of the mounting block is adjacent to the second interior surface of the channel.

5. The brush holder assembly of claim 1 , wherein the mounting block includes first and second outer side surfaces, and the channel includes first and second inner side surfaces; and wherein when the removable component is selectively coupled to the mounting block, at least a portion of the mounting block is disposed within the channel such that at least a portion of the first and second outer side surfaces of the mounting block are disposed between the first and second inner side surfaces of the channel.

6. A brush holder assembly for holding a brush in contact with a moving conductive surface, the brush holder assembly comprising:

a mounting block configured to extend from a stationary base, the mounting block having an overall thickness; and

a removable component for selective coupling to the mounting block, the removable component including a brush holder for holding the brush, and a beam for selectively coupling the removable component to the mounting block, the beam defining a channel, wherein the mounting block extends into the channel of the beam when the removable component is selectively coupled to the mounting block, wherein the removable component has an overall thickness greater than the thickness of the mounting block and wherein the thickness of the brush holder is greater than the thickness of the mounting block.

7. The brush holder assembly of claim 6 , wherein the comparative thicknesses of the brush holder and the mounting block allows for higher brush density about the electrical device.
