Abstract

An exemplary medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient is disclosed, comprising an antimicrobial material comprising at least one metal and an agent that inhibits diffusion of the at least one metal from the antimicrobial material. The antimicrobial material comprises a coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device. Methods for preparing medical devices and methods of using the medical devices having the antimicrobial material are also disclosed.

Claims (39)

1. A medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient, the medical device comprising:

an antimicrobial coating over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device, the antimicrobial coating comprising:

a hydrogel layer;

at least one metal; and

an activated carbon agent that slows diffusion of the at least one metal from the antimicrobial coating.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial coating is formed over at least a portion of a surface of a catheter.

3. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one metal is selected from: silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

4. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

5. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the antimicrobial coating further comprises an antioxidant.

6. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel layer comprises a cross-linked polymer network.

7. A medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient, the medical device comprising:

a catheter;

an antimicrobial coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of a catheter, the antimicrobial coating comprising:

a hydrogel layer;

silver; and

activated carbon.

8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the catheter has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

9. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the hydrogel layer comprises a cross-linked polymer network.

10. A method of manufacturing a medical device, the method comprising:

providing a medical device; and

forming a coating over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device at least in part by the application of a coating formulation comprising a coating solution, wherein the coating comprises an antimicrobial material including at least one metal and an activated carbon agent that slows diffusion of the at least one metal from the coating.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the metal is selected from: silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the coating further comprises an antioxidant.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is accomplished by dipping or spraying the medical device.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is accomplished in a series of application steps to form a plurality of coating layers.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is followed by a cross-linking reaction.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the coating further comprises a hydrogel layer.

18. A method of reducing nosocomial infections in a patient, comprising:

providing a medical device comprising a coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device at least in part by the application of a coating formulation comprising a coating solution, wherein the coating comprises an antimicrobial material including at least one metal and an activated carbon agent that slows diffusion of the at least one metal from the coating; and

inserting the medical device so that the coating is subcutaneously disposed at least partially within a patient.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the at least one metal is selected from: silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the coating further comprises an antioxidant.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein the medical device includes a catheter.

23. The method of claim 18 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is accomplished by dipping or spraying the medical device.

24. The method of claim 18 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is accomplished in a series of application steps to form a plurality of coating layers.

25. The method of claim 18 , wherein the application of the coating formulation is followed by a cross-linking reaction.

26. The method of claim 18 , wherein the coating further comprises a hydrogel layer.
