Abstract

Method and apparatus for file-level restore from raw partition backups. A backup mechanism may be provided that is configured to perform raw partition backups to a media server and to support file-level restores from the raw partition backups through, for example, Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI Logical Unit (LUN) export of the raw partition backup images to client systems. Once a LUN is exported and mounted on the client system, direct file manipulation using standard file system commands may be performed. Embodiments achieve both fast backup and individual file retrieval without the necessity of understanding native file system formats and without requiring a file system mapping of the source (client) partition. Thus, embodiments may be used in heterogeneous environments.

Claims (45)

1. A method, comprising:

performing a raw partition backup from a storage partition on a client system to a backup server to generate a raw partition backup image of the storage partition;

the backup server exporting the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system in accordance with a standard protocol;

mounting the virtual disk on the client system; and

the backup server receiving one or more commands from the client system in accordance with the standard protocol to access the virtual disk at the backup server.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said exporting the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system comprises exporting the raw partition backup image as a SCSI LUN.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the standard protocol is one of Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the client system is configured to store data in accordance with one type of file system, and the backup server is configured to store data in accordance with a different type of file system.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 , further comprising performing one or more file system operations on the virtual disk on the client system in accordance with the file system of the client system.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising performing a restore of one or more files from the virtual disk to the partition on the client system in accordance with a file system of the client system.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

initiating a file system operation on the virtual disk on the client system in accordance with a file system of the client system;

sending a command to the backup server in accordance with the standard protocol in response to the initiated file operation, wherein the command specifies one or more logical blocks of the virtual disk;

translating the one or more logical blocks specified in the command to one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image; and

returning data from the one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image to the client system in accordance with the standard protocol, wherein said data corresponds to the one or more logical blocks.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein, in said performing the raw partition backup, file system mapping of files of the storage partition is not performed.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the backup server requires no knowledge of the content of the raw partition backup image.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the backup server requires no knowledge of a file system used on the client system.

11. A backup server, comprising:

one or more storage devices;

a processor; and

a memory comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are executable by the processor to implement a backup mechanism configured to:

perform a raw partition backup from a storage partition on a client system to the one or more storage devices to generate a raw partition backup image of the storage partition on the one or more storage devices;

export the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system in accordance with a standard protocol;

wherein the virtual disk is mountable on the client system; and

receive one or more commands from the client system in accordance with the standard protocol to access the virtual disk at the backup server.

12. The backup server as recited in claim 11 , wherein, to export the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system, the backup mechanism is further configured to export the raw partition backup image as a SCSI LUN.

13. The backup server as recited in claim 11 , wherein the standard protocol is one of Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI.

14. The backup server as recited in claim 11 , wherein the client system is configured to store data in accordance with one type of file system, and the backup server is configured to store data in accordance with a different type of file system.

15. The backup server as recited in claim 11 , wherein the backup mechanism is further configured to:

receive a command in accordance with the standard protocol in response to a file operation on the virtual disk initiated on the client system in accordance with a file system of the client system, wherein the command specifies one or more logical blocks of the virtual disk;

translate the one or more logical blocks specified in the command to one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image on the backup server; and

return data from the one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image to the client system in accordance with the standard protocol, wherein said data corresponds to the one or more logical blocks.

16. A computer-accessible storage medium comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are computer-executable to implement a backup mechanism configured to:

perform a raw partition backup from a storage partition on a client system to a backup server to generate a raw partition backup image of the storage partition on the backup server;

export the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system in accordance with a standard protocol;

wherein the virtual disk is mountable on the client system; and

receive one or more commands from the client system in accordance with the standard protocol to access the virtual disk at the backup server.

17. The computer-accessible storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein, to export the raw partition backup image as a virtual disk to the client system, the backup mechanism is further configured to export the raw partition backup image as a SCSI LUN.

18. The computer-accessible storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein the standard protocol is one of Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI.

19. The computer-accessible storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein the client system is configured to store data in accordance with one type of file system, and the backup server is configured to store data in accordance with a different type of file system.

20. The computer-accessible storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein the backup mechanism is further configured to:

receive a command in accordance with the standard protocol in response to a file operation on the virtual disk initiated on the client system in accordance with a file system of the client system, wherein the command specifies one or more logical blocks of the virtual disk;

translate the one or more logical blocks specified in the command to one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image on the backup server; and

return data from the one or more physical blocks of the raw partition backup image to the client system in accordance with the standard protocol, wherein said data corresponds to the one or more logical blocks.
