Surgical suturing apparatus with detachable handle
A surgical suturing apparatus includes a suture housing, a needle mounted within the suture housing for movement about an arcuate path, a drive assembly operably associated with the needle for controlling movement of the needle with a suture secured thereto about the arcuate path in a manner facilitating application of the suture to tissue, a handle, an elongated flexible member having a distal end attached to the suture housing and a proximal end attached to the handle, and a mechanism for releasing and reattaching the handle to the flexible member.
1. A surgical suturing apparatus, comprising:
a suture housing;
a needle mounted within the suture housing for movement about an arcuate path;
a drive assembly operably associated with the needle for controlling movement of the needle with a suture secured thereto about the arcuate path in a manner facilitating application of the suture to tissue;
a handle including a central grip and a slide member that moves relative to the central grip;
a supporting structure extending between the handle and the suture housing;
a flexible drive cable extending from the handle to the drive assembly, the drive cable extending through the supporting structure and including a protrusion formed along a proximal tip of the drive cable; and
a means for releasing and reattaching the handle to the drive cable includes a central passageway formed in the handle and in which the drive cable is stored and mounted, the central passageway includes a first open end and a second closed end with a recess shaped and dimensioned for receiving the protrusion of the drive cable formed therein, and a spring loaded tripper lock is positioned adjacent the second closed end for selectively engaging the protrusion of the drive cable when the protrusion of the drive cable is mounted within the recess, wherein the means for releasing and reattaching includes a locking slide along the slide member, the locking slide being shaped and dimensioned to frictional engage a collar formed on the drive cable.
2. The suturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the handle or the suture housing are too large to pass through a working channel of an endoscope.
3. The suturing apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the handle or suture housing are at least 3 mm wide.
4. The suturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly moves the needle about a continuous circular path.
5. The suturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for insertion through a natural orifice of a patient.
6. The suturing apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for passage through an orifice from approximately 3 mm to approximately 24 mm in diameter.
7. The suturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for laparoscopic insertion through a trocar.
8. The suturing apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for passage through an orifice from approximately 3 mm to approximately 18 mm in diameter.
9. A surgical suturing apparatus shaped and dimensioned for insertion through a natural orifice of a patient, comprising:
a suture housing;
a needle mounted within the suture housing for movement about an arcuate path;
a drive assembly operably associated with the needle for controlling movement of the needle with a suture secured thereto about the arcuate path in a manner facilitating application of the suture to tissue;
a handle including a central grip and a slide member that moves relative to the central grip;
a supporting structure extending between the handle and the suture housing;
a drive cable extending from the handle to the drive assembly, the drive cable extending through the supporting structure and including a protrusion formed along a proximal tip of the drive cable; and
a means for releasing and reattaching the handle to the drive cable includes a central passageway formed in the handle and in which the drive cable is stored and mounted, the central passageway includes a first open end and a second closed end with a recess shaped and dimensioned for receiving the protrusion of the drive cable formed therein, and a spring loaded tripper lock is positioned adjacent the second closed end for selectively engaging the protrusion of the drive cable when the protrusion of the drive cable is mounted within the recess, wherein the means for releasing and reattaching includes a locking slide along the slide member, the locking slide being shaped and dimensioned to frictional engage a collar formed on the drive cable.
10. The suturing apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the handle or the suture housing are too large to pass through a working channel of an endoscope.
11. The suturing apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for passage through an orifice from approximately 3 mm to approximately 24 mm in diameter.
12. A surgical suturing apparatus shaped and dimensioned for laparoscopic insertion through a trocar, comprising:
a suture housing;
a needle mounted within the suture housing for movement about an arcuate path;
a drive assembly operably associated with the needle for controlling movement of the needle with a suture secured thereto about the arcuate path in a manner facilitating application of the suture to tissue;
a handle including a central grip and a slide member that moves relative to the central grip;
a supporting structure extending between the handle and the suture housing;
a drive cable extending from the handle to the drive assembly, the drive cable extending through the supporting structure and including a protrusion formed along a proximal tip of the drive cable; and
a means for releasing and reattaching the handle to the drive cable includes a central passageway formed in the handle and in which the drive cable is stored and mounted, the central passageway includes a first open end and a second closed end with a recess shaped and dimensioned for receiving the protrusion of the drive cable formed therein, and a spring loaded tripper lock is positioned adjacent the second closed end for selectively engaging the protrusion of the drive cable when the protrusion of the drive cable is mounted within the recess, wherein the means for releasing and reattaching includes a locking slide along the slide member, the locking slide being shaped and dimensioned to frictional engage a collar formed on the drive cable.
13. The suturing apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the handle or the suture housing are too large to pass through a working channel of an endoscope.
14. The suturing apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the suture housing is shaped and dimensioned for passage through an orifice from approximately 3 mm to approximately 18 mm in diameter.
