Abstract

A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate and a second substrate; a gate line and a data line on the first substrate that cross each other to define a pixel region; a pixel electrode in the pixel region; a thin film transistor at the crossing of the gate and data lines, and connected to the pixel electrode; at least one first electric field distortion unit in the pixel electrode to control a liquid crystal director by electric field distortion; a second electric field distortion unit between the pixel electrode and the first substrate; and a layer of liquid crystal molecules between the first and second substrates.

at least one first electric field distortion unit in the pixel electrode to control a liquid crystal director by electric field distortion;

a second electric field distortion unit between the pixel electrode and the first substrate, which the second electric field distortion unit is a stepped portion including a gate metal layer, a gate insulating layer, a semiconductor layer, a source/drain electrode layer and a passivation layer; and

a layer of liquid crystal molecules between the first and second substrates, wherein the stepped portion of the second electric field distortion unit is simultaneously formed during the formation of the thin film transistor to implement a multi-domains in one pixel without additional fabrication process,

wherein the gate metal layer, the gate insulating layer, a semiconductor layer and the source/drain electrode layer of the stepped portion are patterned in a slit form and they are stacked in sequence, and

wherein the passivation layer of the stepped portion is directly contacted on the source/drain electrode layer patterned in the slit form and the first substrate of the pixel region.

2. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the second electric field distortion unit is parallel to the first electric field distortion unit.

3. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the first electric field distortion unit is a slit in the pixel electrode.

4. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the gate metal layer, the passivation layer and the pixel electrode form a storage capacitor.

5. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second electric field distortion units are alternately arranged parallel to each other as oblique lines to form multi-domains in the pixel region.

6. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , further comprising vertical alignment layers disposed on inside surfaces of the first and second substrates for controlling the initial arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules.

7. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid crystal display device is multi-domain vertical alignment mode.

8. A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device having a first substrate and a second substrate, comprising:

forming a gate line and a data line on the first substrate that cross each other to define a pixel region;

forming a pixel electrode including at least one first electric field distortion unit in the pixel electrode to control a liquid crystal director by electric field distortion;

forming a thin film transistor at crossing of the gate and data lines, and connected to the pixel electrode;

forming a second electric field distortion unit between the pixel electrode and the first substrate, which the second electric field distortion unit is a stepped portion including a gate metal layer, a gate insulating layer, a semiconductor layer, a source/drain electrode layer and a passivation layer; and

providing a layer of liquid crystal molecules between the first and second substrates, wherein the stepped portion of the second electric field distortion unit is simultaneously formed during the formation of the thin film transistor to implement a multi-domains in one pixel without additional fabrication process,
