Abstract

Interactive media guidance systems, devices, and methods that enable media content delivery and/or control by a media content user via a user equipment device capable of interfacing with a media content source using a backchannel network.

Claims (63)

1 . A method for controlling media content delivery comprising:

establishing communications via a first data channel between a media content source and a media device for delivery of media content;

establishing communications via a backchannel network between the media content source and the media device, wherein the backchannel network is separate from the first data channel;

receiving, at the media device, a user command;

sending, from the media device, media control information based on the user command to the media content source via the backchannel network in real-time or near real-time; and

controlling, at the media content source, the delivery of the media content to the media device via the first data channel in response to the media control information sent from the media device via the backchannel network.

2 . The method of claim 1 comprising:

receiving the media control information at a clearinghouse;

processing the media control information at the clearinghouse; and

transmitting the processed media control information from the clearinghouse to the media content source.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the processing includes converting at least a portion of the media control information from a first information format into a second information format of a plurality of information formats.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the backchannel network includes a local area network.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the backchannel network includes a wireless local area network.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the backchannel network includes a cellular telephone network.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content source includes a distribution facility.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending includes:

sending, to at least one distribution facility, the media control information; and

retrieving, at the at least one distribution facility, the media content from the media content source.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the media content source includes at least one distribution facility.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the processing includes determining the at least one distribution facility of a plurality of distribution facilities to send the media control message.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining is based on at least one of the location, identity, and subscriber information related to the user equipment device.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content includes at least one of a media program, a media program listing, a media program schedule, media content meta data, a user equipment device application, and a user equipment device application update.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media control information includes an order for at least one of a media program, a media program listing, a media program schedule, a user equipment device application, media content meta data, a VCR-like command, and a user equipment device application update.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the VCR-like command includes one of play, pause, fast forward, and rewind.

15 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the clearinghouse includes at least one of an interactive programming guide, a web server, and a user application distribution server.

16 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the clearinghouse includes at least one of a subscriber database, a user equipment application database, a network provider database, and a media content database.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data channel includes one-way media network.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the one-way media network includes one of a cable television network, a satellite television network, and a over-the-air media delivery network.

19 . A media device for an interactive media guidance system, the interactive media guidance system including at least one media content source, the media device comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processor in communication with the transceiver, the processor configured for i) establishing communications via a first data channel with a media content source for delivery of media content, ii) establishing communications via a backchannel network with the media content source wherein the backchannel network is separate from the first data channel, iii) receiving a user command and, iv) sending media control information based on the user command to the media content source via the backchannel network in real-time or near real-time wherein the media content source controls the delivery of the media content to the media device via the first data channel in response to the media control information sent from the media device via the backchannel network.

20 . The device of claim 19 , wherein sending the media control information includes sending the media control information to a clearinghouse wherein the clearinghouse processes the media control information and transmits the processed media control information to the media content source.

21 . The device of claim 20 , wherein the clearinghouse processing includes converting at least a portion of the media control information from a first information format into a second information format of a plurality of information formats.

22 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the backchannel network includes a local area network.

23 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the backchannel network includes a wireless local area network.

24 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the backchannel network includes a cellular telephone network.

25 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the media content source includes a distribution facility.

26 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the sending includes:

sending, to at least one distribution facility, the media control message; and

retrieving, at the at least one distribution facility, the media content from the media content source.

27 . The device of claim 20 , wherein the media content source includes at least one distribution facility.

28 . The device of claim 27 , wherein the clearinghouse processing includes determining the at least one distribution facility of a plurality of distribution facilities to send the media control message.

29 . The device of claim 28 , wherein the determining is based on at least one of the location, identity, and subscriber information related to the media device.

30 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the media content includes at least one of a media program, a media program listing, a media program schedule, media content meta data, a user equipment device application, and a user equipment device application update.

31 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the media control information includes an order for at least one of a media program, a media program listing, a media program schedule, a user equipment device application, media content meta data, a VCR-like command, and a user equipment device application update.

32 . The device of claim 31 , wherein the VCR-like command includes one of play, pause, fast forward, and rewind.
