Abstract

A loop back connector and methods for testing lines in a fiber optic network are disclosed. The loop back connector includes a ferrule having an interface side constructed for optical connection to a multifiber optical cable. The loop back connector also includes first and second optical loop back paths, each having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side. The terminal ends of each loop back path are adapted to be aligned to fibers in the multifiber optical cable. The method includes injecting a signal on a first optical path at a first location, looping back the signal at a second location onto a second optical path, and receiving the signal on the second optical path at the first location.

Claims (33)

1. A fiber optic cable assembly comprising:

a main cable having a first end and an oppositely disposed second end;

a plurality of tethers, with each tether having a multifiber connectorized end and being separated from the main cable at a breakout location, wherein the tethers are intermittently disposed between the first end and the second end of the main cable;

a factory-integrated enclosure disposed over at least a portion of the breakout location;

a loop back connector plugged into the multifiber connectorized end of each of the plurality of tethers, wherein the loop back connector includes:

a ferrule structure having an interface side that engages a ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end of the tether;

a first optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side, the first terminal end being aligned with a first fiber in the ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end of the tether and the second terminal end being aligned with a second fiber in the ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end; and

a second optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side, the first terminal end being aligned with a third fiber in the ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end and the second terminal end being aligned with a fourth fiber in the ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end.

2. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the loop back connector includes a mechanical fastener for mechanically coupling the loop back connector to the multifiber connectorized end.

3. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 2 , wherein the mechanical fastener includes a plurality of threads.

4. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 1 , further comprising alignment features that provide alignment between the ferrule structure of the loop back connector and the ferrule of the multifiber connectorized end.

5. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 4 , wherein the alignment features include alignment pins.

6. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 5 , wherein the alignment pins are provided at the ferrule structure of the loop back connector.

7. The fiber optic cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the loop back connector includes a housing that encloses the first and second optical loop back paths.

8. A loop back plug comprising:

a plug body having a first end portion;

a ferrule structure supported at the first end portion of the plug body, the ferrule structure having an interface side that faces outward from the first end portion of the plug body,

a first optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side of the ferrule structure; and

a second optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side of the ferrule structure; and

the first and second loop back paths being enclosed within the plug body.

9. The loop back plug of claim 8 , wherein the ferrule structure includes guide pins that project outwardly from the first end portion of the plug body.

10. A method of testing lines in a fiber optic network, the method comprising:

providing a fiber optic cable assembly including:

a main cable having a first end and an oppositely disposed second end;

a plurality of tethers, with each tether having a multifiber connectorized end and being separated from the main cable at a breakout location, wherein the tethers are intermittently disposed between the first end and the second end of the main cable;

a factory integrated enclosure disposed over at least a portion of the breakout location;

injecting a signal on a first optical path at a first location;

looping back the signal at a second location via one of a plurality of loop back connectors that is plugged into the multifiber connectorized end of one of the plurality of tethers, the loop back connectors comprising:

a ferrule having an interface side constructed for optical connection to a multifiber optical cable having a plurality of optical paths including the first optical path and a second optical path;

a first optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side, the first terminal end adapted to be aligned to the first optical path and the second terminal end adapted to be aligned to the second optical path;

a second optical loop back path having first and second terminal ends positioned at the interface side, the first terminal end configured to couple to a third optical path and the second terminal end configured to couple to a fourth optical path;

receiving the signal at the first location on the second optical path.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the loop back connector is connected to a multifiber connector positioned at a breakout location of a distribution cable.
